Coping Skills for the Really "Down" Daysby the members of GCM's "Dealing with Depression" forum(Remember, severe depression left untreated may worsen.)Pray.Come to GCM and get support and prayers from your online friends! Cook frozen meals or make other meals that are easy to prepare. Visit or call a friend. Give your children simple, no-mess activities to do such as cutting, sticking, play-dough, computer, tv. Say "no" when others are asking too much of you. Leave the beds unmade and close the door if visitors are coming over. Don't let the telephone monopolize your time - let the answering machine get it or use caller Id. Rest! Take a mental vacation and read an easy novel. Take a bath or hot shower. Drink plenty of water. Exercise - it increases serotonin levels. Find people in the church who understand, maybe an older person with more experience and time. Do something each day with your child, to feel achievement, such as reading a book, drawing a picture, doing a puzzle, going for a walk to get something to show your husband when he gets home. Get fresh air!
Journal/write. Read a Psalm. On my really bad days, I can't even make myself open my Bible. But everytime I read a Psalm, it refreshes me spiritually and lifts me up just enough to get through. Sing with the kids - silly songs, hymns, anything. It reminds me what joy is.
