Re: kombucha 101 thread!

I think you need it above the jar, not above the SCOBY in the jar. Is that what you're asking SC?

How long does a SCOBY stay good in the fridge? My SCOBY granddaughter is a dud. I have some in my fridge from Dandelion but she gave me those last month.

It's been recommended to leave a minimum of 2 inches of head-space in your jars, for the scoby to breath, and bubble.

If your Scoby is in some liquid in the fridge, it can last a long time. I'd for sure pull it out and start a new batch. :yes

It was suggested that I post this picture. Story behind it: DH decided he wanted to make kombucha (I didn't really care). He started it and then left it in the laundry room and didn't touch it for like, four-six months. This is the result. (spoilered because it's a large picture)

Aww, the poor neglected SCOBY!! Someone call SPS (Scoby Protective Services) :roll

Btw, if you cut that sucker in half (just one layer) you can start over

Yep, that's what I'm doing tonight!

Of course, I'm terrified that I'm going to screw this all up somehow. Pray for me?

You won't screw it up. :hug Just feed it, it will love you and give you booch. I've let mine go months, too. :shrug

The scoby I got is a quarter off of one about that size. It's made about 8 babies since. :) Don't be too scared!!

Re: kombucha 101 thread!

Here's a pic of it once I got it out of the jar. I had to cut it in half, cause the top was really thick and not very gelatinous. I used a baby off the bottom for my new jar!

Re: kombucha 101 thread!

wow. fascinating stuff!!!! Is it slippery and globby? :shiver cold and gloopy...

I wonder if it's like when you have more patience for your own kids than you do with strangers' kids. I hope I love my Scoby when I get it. :giggle

That was about half as big as the one I neglected. But my mold issues are ongoing..... :( Even with a new scoby.

I told mil it was moldy.... She only replied, "Hmmmmmmm". Lol. Don't think she wants to help. :lol
