I'm oven/range shopping - any advice?
Our range has been in rough shape the last year and finally died completely this weekend. It's not super fun to feed a family of 4 with no oven and only 2 burners working on the stove, so I'm shopping in earnest for a new one. Has to be electric and under $1,000 including delivery charges. I would like to try the smooth type style.
I am looking at some of the nicer options, like the fifth burner, the convection option, options for delayed baking and "Sabbath mode" where it looks like I can set it to come on and stay on at a particular time and temperature. I bake our own bread about 90% of the time and my kids have afternoon sports activities 3-5 days a week so I am wondering if those would be helpful features, worth the extra money. Oh one other thing that limits my choices: all my appliances are white and I would like to range to match. This is the one I'm leaning towards so far. http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?...ductId=4222169 |

I'd get a double oven if at all possible. That's my main requirement whenever we get a new stove.

I just got a maytag double oven & really like it. It was $1400 in Canada, not sure what that would be in usd.
It's white, flat top, has delayed & convection options! |

The one you linked to looks like an updated version of the one I have. I've been happy with mine.

Double oven is out of my price range unfortunately.

Was your last oven glass top? I had one before and hated it so much.

For electric. I've seen awesome deals on Craigslist. I won't consider electric though.

No we have coils and we hate them. Why did you hate the glass top? Cleaning? We don't have any gas hookup in our house so that's not a choice unfortunately. I'd love to have a gas range and an electric oven. |

If you are limited to electric, I'd definitely do flat top as opposed to the coils. I HATE the coils and I've totally loved my flat top.

I don't love my glass top. :no It's fairly easy to clean, but you have to clean it every time you spill the slightest thing on there or it can damage the burners. BTDT. I only have 3 useful burners now. Also, you're not supposed to use cast iron on them or do canning. After several attempts to can jelly on my stove, I now go over to my mom's house to do canning on her coils.

Re: I'm oven/range shopping - any advice?
:think Interesting. I've never had those issues with our glass top and I use cast iron exclusively.
I also have never had any of the burners damaged by spillage and I openly admit that I do not clean after every use. :blush :lol And am a huge cooker, and a rather frequent spiller. :giggle In fact, when we bought this house (a foreclosure) the burners were in bad shape and I thought the stains were permanent, but I removed all of them with a cleaner called "Bar Keepers Friend." Maybe there are different qualities of glass top, which might explain the big variance in experience. :think I have no clue, I've never purchased one, just purchased a house with an existing glass top. :yes |

I have a glass top and do not clean after every spill. I've had no issues.

Re: I'm oven/range shopping - any advice?
Mine is older and I bought it refurbished. That could be part of it. :shrug

Re: I'm oven/range shopping - any advice?
Bumping this thread! I broke our cooktop (it's separate from the oven). I'm looking at replacing both since the oven isn't much bigger than an easy-bake :giggle.
Any more thoughts on glass-top vs. coils? Brand recs.? I'm a horrible cleaner, so I need something that can stand up to mess! I want to keep using cast-iron, and I would love to eventually be a canner. Angela, did you end up with the one you linked in the op? |
Re: I'm oven/range shopping - any advice?
I love having a glass top!
The biggest thing I would look at is burner size. Make sure they're convenient for what you want. Also the oven being self-cleaning is a nice feature. I hate cleaning ovens! |
