Anybody keep a small pool without chlorine?

Title pretty much says it all. :) We're being given a ten foot diameter pool, and are trying to figure out how to take care of it.

we sort of do.

the set up is expensive...you would need a sand filter and a saltwater system. We at this point only have a sand filter. I think it was about 150 dollars. We use minimal chlorine. Really, not much at all. The sand filters the water beautifully. I don't know if we will splurge this year and get the saltwater filter as well..we have some other expenses coming up this summer. We got ours off of amazon.

My parents used a chlorine alternative.....lemme see if I can find the name....

Ok I think it was baquacil? But it looks like there are a lot of chlorine free options now. :giggle

That was for a 10' round 3' deep filled with the garden hose pool. We did have a filter on it - came with the pool - but nothing special.

I know several people who use baquacil. I think Wal-Mart carries it now and the prices have gone down a lot.

Do not use any bromide products, they're just as bad as chlorine. Some salt systems are simply chlorine generators.

Isn't there a way to use baking soda?

From a chemist point of view, iodine would be the ideal replacement for chlorine/bromine but I don't know the cost. Probably pricey so the sand, salt, baking soda ideas are great.

We used baquacil for years when we had a small pool. It's chlorine and bromine free.
