Have never been so close
 

I have never dealt with a child who is so strong willed and dead set against having their bum wiped as this one (17 mths). Diaper changes take 20 minutes and most of that time is spent trying to get her to stay still enough for me to wipe her and poop getting on everything.

Today I got ANGRY. I yelled "STOP THAT! STAY STILL! I FEEL ANGRY!" she cried louder, wiggled more, flipped around.

I tried to get her to kick out some of her energy, she had toys in both hands, I did what I knew but I am tired! My body was actually shaking from tiredness.

I instinctively wanted to hit her.

I put her, poop covered bum and all, in her crib and walked away until I'd cooled off. Came back, changed her and she smiles and says "clean bum".

Thank God it's almost nap time. It's been an exhausting day.

Hang in there mama! It must be the age range. My dd is 14 months and doing the same types of things. Everything is a struggle with her and every time she throws herself down and kicks, screams, and cries. :sigh I'll be praying for you!

You were right & wise to walk away. Good call! Much better than regret later.

I just wanted to add....it's not mean for mama to hold an unhappy baby to wipe her bottom. You are keeping her healthy by doing it. 20 mins is a really really long time for both if you to be locked in that battle. :phew

We put one leg across baby's legs and the other holding the arms down. Lift leg, wipe bum, repeat.

I remember reading on here somewhere about the diaper change hold, and it saved my sanity. I would sit in the floor and lay him in front of me with his feet toward me. Then, I'd place my feet on his armpits/shoulders to hold him down so I could change him.

Because of his ASD, J wore diapers long past when most kids potty train, so when he got bigger and too strong for that hold, I flipped him the other way and held his arms under my thighs. I'd practically have to fold him in half to be able to clean his butt, but he'd usually be in that position anyway because he'd be fighting me so bad.

I'm right there with ya! I need to read the replies but in the past week or so,I've wanted to smack my 15 month olds hand several times. I have picked him up too forcefully a time or 2 to redirect him :(

Maybe try laying down if have ben changing standing up or other way around.That is not a fun stage! Or putting in bathtub for poop changes and stripping diaper off and rinsing off while standing

Hang in there. My LO used to do that with every diaper change until one day he just magically stopped for the most part.

I had to hold him down with my feet. Turning the ceiling fan on/off so he could watch helped. When he was smaller, singing didn't help him, but it reminded me to keep my face and voice calm and not scary. Now that he is older, we sing "if you're happy and you know it clap your hands" to distract him and keep his hands out of the mess. We also just rinsed off in the tub a few times when I felt my nerves getting frayed.

I just know that the more upset I got, the more upset he got. Walking away is always a better option than wrestling a baby while angry. Hang in there. It gets better.

Also, have you considered introducing the potty? Two of mine were pooping on the potty by that age. :tu

I did think about it. I did some research and based on Dr. Sears' website I don't think she's ready but getting close.

It can't hurt to have a little potty and just introduce it and have it sitting in the bathroom so when she is ready, she's already accustomed to the idea. :tu
