choosing a pillow

I need a pillow is a constant refrain at my house. I complain about it all the time. I have never found a pillow that lasts longer than six weeks before it starts to give me terrible headaches. I have no idea what to pick in a pillow except I cannot have a memory foam pillow, I get horrific migraines, and I can't have water filled pillows.

I tried to buy a pricier pillow last month, I spent sixty dollars, and I slept beautifully for about a month, and now it gives me headaches. I am at a terrible loss about how to find a pillow!

Re: choosing a pillow

Is it about the support/angle, or is it about allergies/chemical sensitivities?

I can use a rolled up blanket, a pile of clothes, the cheapest pillow on sale at the cheapest store, and be fine, so I am utterly mystified.

I have the same problem! For me, it's support.

It is support. I don't know of any allergies

have you tried a feather pillow? that is all that has ever worked for me. dh uses the regular fluff filled stuff and if i somehow end up asleep on one i wake up and my ear hurts from laying on the "hard" pillow:shifty:shrug3

This is for stomach sleeping, right?

not always. I sleep on my stomach and my sides. When I'm on my stomach I typically push my pillow out of the way, but I'm typically a side sleeper anymore. It just happened after the baby needed to nurse all night :giggle

Ditch the pillow completely. :yes Same issue here and my headaches and migraines are helped significantly by not sleeping on a pillow at all. Keep a nice fluffy towel or a small throw or travel blanket handy by the bed to wad up under your neck when (if) you turn on your side.

Tried it. It gives me migraines. I have to have a pillow, but I'm having a hard time finding one. I get frustrated that after just one month my "firm" pillow turns into a pile of garbage.

Do you go to the chiropractor? I find if my neck is out of alignment, I get horrible headaches regardless of my rawk awesome (memory foam) contour pillow.

Re: choosing a pillow

I think my not rawk awesome pillow doesn't help my neck stay in alignment, though.

Pillows are tricky. I know you've already tried it, but hear me out.

Memory foam is not all alike. We have 2. One is the perfect amount of squishiness & the other is too hard, despite them being the same brand. I hate the hard one and my 3 yo stole the perfect one.

Sorry you're having such a hard time. How frustrating to have to keep buying pillow after pillow.

I have to sleep on two pillows, one stacked on the other. Have you tried that?

Yes, but they always wear out within a month. That is my problem. I can't find a pillow that lasts longer than 6 weeks max before it gets terribly lumpy and everything clumps together. I've tried feather, down, synthetic etc...

chiro-flow. water-filled pillow.

http://www.chiroflow.com/en/index.html

I've had mine for about six years or so. I LOVE it. I take it with me everywhere. Got it from my old chiropractor - my new one sells them, too. My neck is a mess and tends to get jacked up occasionally, and I'm convinced a bad pillow can trigger that. I still have flare-ups now and then, but I do think this pillow helps.

But also...the chiro would say stomach sleeping is a big no-no for your spine anyway :duck

:doh oops - I missed your statement in the OP about being unable to have water-filled pillows. why is that, though?

I had a water pillow and slept on it two nights and was in some of the worst pain of my entire life. I couldn't turn my head for several days. I've had actual nightmares about having to use that pillow again. DH tried it for two nights too and had severe problems that he still doesn't think are cleared up eight months later.

oh my. that sounds awful. I know the *amount* of water can and should be adjusted to what's comfortable for each individual...but I can see how after that experience, neither of you would want to experiment with the "right" amount. oy. good luck with your pillow hunt...

I agree. DH and I both have Tempur-pedic pillows, but he has a larger one. He won't sleep on mine, and I won't sleep with his.

That's what I do - a fluffy one with a quilted pillow case/sham on top of my Tempur-pedic. Honestly, I think the pillowcase makes a real difference.

I feel ya. Dh and I bought these fab double chambered down pillows (one chamber inside the other). They were $60 pillows on sale for $30 each - keep in mind, this was 12 years ago. They are still pretty decent. Dh went through a phase though where he was convinced there had to be a better pillow out there. Three pillows and $100+ later, he gave up and went back to his old feathered pillow. :shrug

I have a latex pillow I have loved for years. I used to be so mad at my pillows. I would toss, turn, twist and fluff until I finally went to sleep. It all ended the year I found a latex pillow! They will last years and are great for allergies.

We've had good luck with the Ralph Lauren pillows and with Shopko brand ones. We replace them every year or two.
