So you’re making hamburgers
For a family of 5 adults. How much ground meat do you buy?
Let’s just say there is a disagreement in my house about this. Help me see which of us is reasonable. |
Re: So you’re making hamburgers
It depends on the size of the burgers. I would say minimum 3 pounds. More of you want bigger burgers. More if most of the adults are men.

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
I use a 1:1 ratio of ground meat to ground mushrooms (one package of sliced baby bella mushrooms - one lb of meat). For 5 people I'd say 2 lbs of meat so there is enough for leftovers (so 1 lb plus the mushrooms if everyone was just having a single hamburger at the meal).

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
One of my sons and I are usually the only burger eaters and he would need at least a half pound and me usually 1/4. But would depend totally on size of adult and appetite and if you used any fillers in them like the mushrooms mentioned

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
Our rule of thumb is 1/2 lb per person (roughly 2 patties each).

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
We're low carb/high fat, so I'd buy 80/20 ground beef (shrinkage). And I'd buy at least three pounds - maybe four if I'm cooking them earlier in the day.
When I make a dish with ground beef as part of the dish, it usually takes two pounds to feed us all. So, when meat is the main event I need at least three pounds. |
Re: So you’re making hamburgers
I would say an absolute minimum is 1.5 lb, I would use that to make 6 paties. If there were teenage boys or people who had been doing physical activity I would by 2 to 2.5 lb

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
If it is five adults/teens I would say 2 or 3lbs. We are 4 and when the kids were little we were fine with 1lb, but now that they are teens we need at least 1 and a 1/2lbs sometimes 2. We usually use lean ground beef so not much shrinkage.

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
A bit more than 1.5lbs or so, aiming for one 1/3 lb patty per adult. (With our bunch, dh used to aim more for 1/4 lb patties, cooking 6 at a time and saving one for leftovers. Now he just gets 5 patties out of 1.5lbs for the five of us, so between 1/4 and 1/3 lb patties.)

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
We make 1/4 lb patties & my husband usually eats 2. So minimum for 1 adult male & the rest only eat 1 patty: it's 1 1/4 lbs minimum but our patties are never perfect ;) so more like 1 1/2 lbs. If it's all adults who eat 2 patties then it's closer to 2 1/2 - 3 lbs.
If you're trying to save $ on meat, I've been known to add quinoa to meat dishes to extend portions. Never tried it with hamburgers but we don't eat them often. |
Re: So you’re making hamburgers
So what I see being said is 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 pounds it meat is generally reasonable.
Thanks guys. And yeah, picky eaters will absolutely not tolerate anything being a mix in filler, bread. Bread crumbs, mushrooms, cheese, quinoa, beans are all a no go on burger night. :( |
Re: So you’re making hamburgers
It depends on what side dishes are offered.
When my dh is making dinner and decides to make burgers, he may cook a bag of frozen peas to go with it. If anything. So he needs to make a lot more than I do because I'll have more filling sides. He easily would use 3 lbs. I probably would, too, just because I'd rather have leftovers than have people be hungry. When I buy the frozen patties, it's a 3 lb package with 12 patties and most people in my family will put 2 patties on 1 bun. So we go through the whole package, usually, with a little leftover. Burgers are kind of an expensive meal so I save it for nights I really don't have time for anything else. ---------- Post added at 10:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:25 PM ---------- Quote:

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
If I bought 1/2 lb per person for our family of 5 (total of 2.5 lbs), I would not expect leftovers although there may be 1-2 patties leftover.

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
I buy 2 to 2-1/2 pounds for burgers because my daughters are hit or miss on how hungry they are anymore. Hubs gets silly grumpy about making the burgers if there is less than 3 pounds. He is the one who makes the burgers but he is not the one who does the grocery budget or shopping. :shrug3

Re: So you’re making hamburgers
I’d say 2-3 lbs
