Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
Ughh! I've got fruit flies. Any advice on how to get rid of them, without getting rid of the source? The Kombucha is in a jar, covered with cheesecloth, then covered with a tea towel.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
you might try putting a lid on it for a while.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
Is the tea towel or cheese cloth fastened on with a rubber band?
Also, one way to get rid of fruit flies is to put some apple cider vinegar in an open shallow dish. Add a few drops of liquid dish soap. The flies will be attracted, then drown themselves. |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
The cheesecloth has a rubber band. I've been changing the tea towels daily so the flies have less of a chance to reproduce. They don't appear to be getting in the kombucha. I will replace the towels and put a fan on them today, to see if that helps...I know if helps keep flies off of me if I sleep with a fan on (I had to do that when I lived in Brazil).

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I have a scoby coming! Now I have to go back and read the thread again! :giggle

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I tried a guava one today from the store. I like this one. I think I could drink this regularly if it had lots of fruit to mask the vinegar flavor. Thankf for encouraging me to try another flavor!
Now about making my own. Hmmmm... |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I am making my fruity ones today!!!I did apple, grape, blueberry, and watermelon.
I was a question does it get sweeter with the fruit in it? Or is it still quite vinegary? |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
it does sweeten up a bit depending upon the fruit.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
My friend told me my raspberry rocked her socks. :lol She's been buying it pre-made and is in LOVE with her new SCOBY and tea. ;)

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*

Just an update....I am spreading the Kombucha love around my area. :giggle
My sweet SIL is trying it (easygoinmomma), I have my MIL/FIL/Greatgrandma going on it and this afternoon I have another friend from church coming out to get some "kombucha lessons" and a scoby. :rockon And I have to say, I have not had a single day of digestion issues since starting to drink a glass a day. :rockon |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I was actually coming to find this thread. I have a question. I put fruit into kombucha on monday and it has been sitting on my counter since and it looks like it is growing something on the top. Is this normal?
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
growing something as in mold? or another scoby? Did you put a lid on it?

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
sounds like a new scoby... should be fine!
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I agree. Mine always look kind of like they have a skim on them, with the fruit...it is another scoby forming. I just throw it out.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
It is kind of creepy. :shifty
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I was very intrigued to see this thread. I am very curious to try kombucha. I saw it recently sold in my local grocery store health section. Kinda pricey though.
I have to admit that I am very nervous about trying to make my own. Of course I am nervous about making other fermented foods. A subject probably for another thread. :) I think I may have to try the store bought one at least once or twice at first. |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
So, um, how sour is it suppose to be? Dh and I tried our first cup tonight and it was VERY sour.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
how long did it sit? the longer it sits the more sour it gets. If you don't like that flavor don't let it sit that long.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
It sat on the counter without fruit for 2 weeks and then almost a week with the fruit in it.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I don't like it to sit that long at all. I know Lisa and others do. I usually only let it sit with the scoby for 7-8 days (but I sniff it often. When it starts to first get that tangy smell, then I know it is done) and then with fruit for 2. Then into the fridge. I let a batch get too sour last week...I just dumped it out. :shrug3

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
So I've tried a few more flavors and I am really starting to love this stuff. It definitely is an acquired taste. It kept our family from getting a bad cold that was going around over thanksgiving. We all felt it starting to come on and I made everyone drink a big glass of kombucha and we started to get better.
AND I talked to my SIL today, and her husband has been brewing kombucha for a while now and is bringing me a scoby over Christmas!!! So I'm hooked. :) I'll be back later to read this all through when I actually get to brew some after Christmas. I do have ONE question - where do you get half gallon jars? Or gallon jars? What is a reasonable price for these jars? Ok, that was three. :giggle |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I've begged around for my jars. :giggle But a couple of them have the label on them and they were from pickles or something from a restaurant. I'd ask around at some local eateries (not fast food) and see if they would keep some empty jars for you.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I use pickle jars from Sam's. I also have some gallon jars. Sometimes you can get gallon pickle jars from theaters that sell pickles.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I have another question, if you use berries to flavor your kombucha, do you eat the berries or throw them out?
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
Are you refrigerating it after 24 hours with the fruit in (I put fruit in, let it sit for a day on the counter and then put it in the fridge).
I do NOT eat the fruit. :shifty It looks so weird. |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
i put it on the counter for 24 hours with the fruit and then put it in the fridge too. i use purred fruit(i took a bunch of strawberries blended them up and put them in ice cube trays and then i just put 2 fruit cubes in a quart jar), but i don't really drink the bottom stuff either
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
They had been on the counter for 3 days, but they looked soggy so I wasn't about to try and eat it.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I don't eat the fruit either. I think you *could* but they are too off in texture for me to swallow them. :shrug3
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
Dh tried the second batch today and said it was way better then the first. :giggle So far I have only managed to get the boys to take sips of it, but that is better then nothing, right.
I have another question :giggle how much can you drink in a day or what is the recommended amount to drink per day? |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I'm glad your second batch was better. :tu
I try to drink a big glassfull daily...I don't know if it is something you could really overdo or not...:think :shrug |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
We love it! right now, I'm watering it down 1/4 Kombucha and 3/4 water so Isaac will drink it and I'm going to slowly increase the ratio of kombucha.
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
:doh Why didn't I think of that? ds3 *really* loves "juice"....even some kombucha would be better than no kombucha!
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
if your new to kombucha you should start off slowly. it does detox you so if you drink to much you can feel really badly. if i have been off of it for awhile i usually start by drinking 1?4-1/2 cup a day and working up to a cup or so by the end of 2 weeks. once your body is used to it you can drink more. i think ronald regan drank like 2 liters a day of it when he had brain(?) cancer--but he was using it as a cure/medicine;) --which worked by the way:yes
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
If you get a batch that's too sour it makes an excellent marinade.
I don't eat the fruit but you can. You can also eat the SCOBY. BTBM, I'm so glad your digestion is improving! Ferments really can help. I paid $3 for some of my gallon jars but some I got free. If you know anyone who buys things from Costco or Sam's they might have gallon jars to give you. Or ask at a restaurant or deli counter. They just recycle them. School cafeteria is another possible source. |
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I finally grew a new scoby and have my first home batch from the new scoby. Just wondering, what do you think is stronger, homemade or the GT's raw?
|
Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I just wanted to come back here and say that I found out part of the reason my kombucha was so sour. I was using a mixed berry blend and that flavor is really sour. I am really liking strawberry and raspberry. I have some apple *brewing* :shifty (that sounds wrong) that I am excited to try. I also wanted to say that I love it way more when it is bubbly!
