grill and/or fire pit suggestions
 

I'd really like to do something more with our backyard this summer since we'll be home so much more. We have a small charcoal grill, like the kind that's only a couple feet off the ground. I'm thinking we want a gas grill. What do we need to know? Where should we look? No Costco membership.

Also thinking a fire pit would be fun, and they are allowed, but is it a good idea? I'm thinking an above ground one?

We have a wooden deck and a small brick patio area next to it, but the fire pit would be in the grass. Is it just going to be a pain to have to mow/play around a fire pit? Not totally sure we'd use it enough- does it take forever for the fire to go out? Bedtime takes forever here, so we can't be outside watching a fire all night either.

Anyone have either and want to throw in their two cents?

We have both and have for a long time. We have gotten grills from Walmart, Home Depot and Lowe’s over the years. I like the ones that have a side burner for pots so I can make a whole meal on it.

We also have an above ground fire pit, it’s honestly a cheap one because I needed it simple and small in our yard. We use it probably once a week if not more toward late summer early fall. It sits on large patio pavers nothing fancy.

We grill a ton and upgraded our grill last year to a komodo joe. Before that we had gas grills- and those were fine.

We made a fire pit out of landscaping stones (those ones that are slightly wedge shaped). You would need to dig out the grass first. We put it out with the hose when we are ready to come in :)

You could also consider a chiminea which would be more portable.

I'm not sure I have really seen much difference in grills. We've had free ones and nice ones that we've paid a lot for!

We're putting in a fire pit next weekend for my birthday. We're planning to use landscaping bricks, the kind that can make a circle. I think 12 per ring and doing 3 rings. Downside, it can't be moved around so choose a good spot! Upside, it's easy, cheap and durable. The metal ones tend to rust holes in the bottoms.

We just bought a gas grill on sale at Lowe’s. We’ve only had charcoal before this. We love it!

I bought dh a Weber Silver gas grill for Father's Day 19 years ago. It's still going.

For fire pits, I agree, you can put out with a hose when done. :tu

We bought a gas grill for $40 today from some guy selling it on a local FB site! He said he used it five times. Looks new! Got the gas cylinder too and found a free one a few days ago on the side of the road. It isn't huge. It should be fine for us since we are cooking for three. Very excited! Now to decide on a fire pit.

My kids made a fire pit themselves.
We have a large yard so it's located in the back one corner. Fire pits are allowed here, just no leaf burning.
Mowing around it is very easy - BUT its on the back part of the yard that is very treed so once summer really hits between the shade and heat we dont have to mow every week like the rest of the yard. The grass does grow up around it where the mower can't hit, but its a square so just that grass needs to be trimmed immediately adjacent. Its easier than mowing around our 17 trees back there.
They dug out the grass and made it out of extra bricks the previous owners had. Its too far for the hose to reach but we just do a bucket or two of water on top.
Its a very popular feature here. We will do dinner and or dessert over the fire pit. Or just have a nice fire.

Oooh, I love that! What did you put in the bottom of the ring? That seems like a great project for my boys. ;)
ETA: They they sell the blocks in a kit so you know how many to get? Seems like that would be smart. We don't have a Lowe's here but we do have Home Depot.
ETA again: Just read an article about how to build them on the HD website. I see the liners you put inside. They sell kits but they are way more expensive than the deal you got!

You don't need a kit or a liner. 36 blocks total. 12 per ring. Plus 2 bags of sand and 2 bags of pumice stone (lava rock)

They have the same stuff at Home Depot!

You can glue them together but we didn't. Leave some spaces for airflow.

We have a grill that is connected to our home's gas line. It's got a side burner, and is big enough for us to grill meat and vegetables. Love it.

We are looking at adding a fire pit. Based on our city's bylaws and system, we might choose to go with a propane powered, portable pit. Our yard's best location, with appropriate distance from house and trees is the LEAST flat part of our yard! Check with your town's bylaws to see what their recommendations are. The main advantages for us with propane vs wood is that it's easy on and off, movable, and can be used even with a fire ban on.

We've been using a gas grill for a while. It's comfortable and powerful. We refused using it because safety is a huge problem. I thought about possible effects and decided that she should replace it. Now I have a fire pit and my mind is clear.

I saw this thread back in May, and I asked DH if we could build one in our back yard. I have another friend on FB, and she is always posting meals that she has cooked over their fire pit. They use dutch oven cooking, and it looks so fun! We have a Scout in our family, so I'm sure she'd love to practice those skills in the yard! Maybe we'll have this someday....

but August in FL is not the time to think about these things!:lol

We're in Texas and we've lit the firepit a couple of times in the last month. It's not super pleasant [emoji38]

But in another month the evenings should be getting cooler! I can't wait! I never thought about trying to cook on it. Does your friend have a grate/grill that sits on top of it?
