Math Curriculum for Student with Learning Disabilities

My 11yr old DS is great at math. Or at least he was. Math was his favorite until this year when he got into multi-step multiplication problems and long division. When we got his learning disabilities diagnosed a couple of years ago (dyslexia, dysgraphia, probably ADHD) the educational psychologist was impressed with his math skills but mentioned she was interested to see what would happen once he started long division. And now I know. He can not keep track of all the steps he needs to do more complicated math questions. He also can not use a card with instructions to help him remember the steps. And if I sit with him and tell him each step in hopes that repetition will help it sink in he just gets angry.

So, any tips for helping him? Or any curriculum recommendations for next year?

Mortensen math. It’s visual and uses manipulatives.

This is not a popular answer but if he understands the consepts if division I would not let the many steps in long division hold him back hand him a calculator. Preferably a graphing one so that the problem doesn't disappear and the leaves only the answer so he can go back and check that he entered the numbers correctly.

Honistly for years I would do all the problems that were supposed to be long division as repeated subtraction problems to get to the answer and then go back and built the work for the long division to be shown on my paper. I knew what was happening but would mix things up or get things in the wrong spot even with graph paper.

Once I got to math - not arithmetic - then I could use a calculator for all the arithmetic and everything much better.

I would try https://diveintomath.com/download-st...4-3rd-edition/ because then you don't have to be the main teacher.

Then write the problems for him so there is plenty of space for each problem.

...............

I'd also suggest https://diveintomath.com/shormann-pr...on-no-sibling/

pre-algebra and let him use a calculator

The traditional way long division (and multi-digit multiplication IMO) is taught is complicated because it doesn't make any sense based on what we have taught kids up unto that point. Suddenly there is an "algorithm" to follow and that algorithm is NOT intuitive.

When I taught C long division, I chose to teach hang-man's division. It takes longer at first, and takes up more space at first, but it is intuitive. He could now do long division a more traditional way now that he really "owns" how long division works, but :shrug3 why change something that isn't broken.

I also did not teach C the traditional method of multi-digit multiplication either. I taught him the lattice method which is a shorthand version of the box method which is built off of blocks so is very intuitive for kids. I started with blocks, through the block method, and then lattice for shorthand. I have switched to this method of multiplication myself because there are fewer errors, it takes up less space, and it is easier to double check.

He still struggled for a while, but it was because his math facts memorization took forever for him and so he had very little confidence. He just had to learn the math facts himself, internalizing and being able to visualize them. He is not a kid that memorizes anything. Neither are DH and I. :shrug3 So that took a bit longer and so the longer stuff was a bit of a struggle as he was still working that out. Something clicked with the facts more recently and he is doing great with these long problems now. Even when he struggled with math facts, hang man division in particular was still very useful because he could always multiply by 10 or 100 or 1 and just take loads of extra steps to get to the answer.

Oh my goodness. This makes long division make so much more sense to me!

It makes double digit multiplication simple too!

I love this! Thanks for sharing! I had my son watch because he "forgot" how to do it :doh
