Who uses hammocks for beds?

I feel like someone around here does it.

I feel like we could all gain so much space without gigantic beds and from what I'm reading everyone would sleep better. It was mentioned kids won't really get out/roll out of bed due to being kind of swaddled up in the hammock.

So...:popcorn

I've tied up my wrap as a hammock to play in, but never as a bed. DD is a really good sleeper or else I would consider tying it in our sidecar crib for her to sleep in.

Re: Who uses hammocks for beds?

I slept in a hammock while on a missions trip in the Amazon. We stayed in some homes where extra hammock hooks on the wall were ready for visitors. During the day the hammock could be unhooked at one end to not take up space in the room. I remember them being comfy, but only once saw a 2yo sleeping with her mom. I brought a couple of hammocks home, but the reality is that our air is sooo much cooler at night that even in the middle of the summer, too much cold air would come through the hammock from underneath. Our hammocks were made of thick jute fabric, and I think we only used a top sheet at night while in Brazil. Previously I had lived in the south of Brazil, and nobody I knew slept in hammocks except if lounging outside on a hot day.

You might be surprised. When you sleep in a hammock you are on a bit of a diagonal so the hammock stretches out to a flat sleeping surface that can be adjusted. It is easy to change your position when you feel the need to.

That is a very interesting idea!! I have never thought of it! Do other GCM'ers do this? Is this safe? I have some nice woven wraps and I've wondered how to make a safe hammock for sleeping for my young dd.

I've always thought that I'd love to sleep in a hammock. Id feel too weird getting rid of my bed though.

i know of some mamas on the baby wearer that do the crib hammock. it is safe!! of course as long as you're sane about it - hang it close to the mattress, monitor breathing etc

Re: Who uses hammocks for beds?

I would be worried about co sleeping in a hammock with a small baby because to me it feels too close to sofa sleeping (confined space, material up side-ish so possibility of suffocation). Of course I haven't actually slept in a hammock :shifty so that could just be irrelevant fears lol

THANKS!! I'm on TBW , but have not been active in a long while. I just logged in and then looked at all those threads and WOW that is about the coolest thing EVER. :hunh

Makes me wish I still had a crib or bunk beds, or something..so that I could string up one of my storch wraps to make a hammock to try out for my dd....

Stiina 04-28-2012 04:19 PM

Re: Who uses hammocks for beds?

I just did it to try it out. My DS27mo had a lot of fun in it - I hung it low to the mattress so he could fall out (he's really cautious and doesn't like being tooooo rambunctious). He basically sat in it and fall out sideways. When he laid down it looked pretty comfy!

Then I put DD4mo in it...but it was too low for her. She was scrunched. So I tied it tighter and it was basically horizontal. She was squirming and arching her back but didn't fall out.

So if you're doing it for beds, OP, make sure you make the hooks close enough to the floor that your kids don't need ladders to get into their beds ;)

Re: Who uses hammocks for beds?

okay, so one of my first baby sitting jobs in Jr high was for two MKs who grew up in Brazil (two differnt families which is why they got married and had babies together, ftr) they ALL slept in hammocks, even the 3-months-old-at-the-time baby. I once had the baby sleeping laying on my chest in her nursery. I could have easily fallen asleep like that.:yes

I've frequently dreamed about using hammocks since then.

There are camping solutions for the cold air circulating around the hammock
http://www.tothewoods.net/ImagesStay...erosa-Side.jpg

putting blankets inside the hammock doesn't do much good because the weight of your body compresses them and reduces the heat holding capacity. So folks use things like sleeping bags that go around the outside/underside of the hammock.

All that research i did about how to hike the Appalachian trails is finally coming in handy :phew

I always wanted to sleep in a hammock full time..my Mom always pointed to an increase risk of kidney disease or some thing. :scratch

Urban legend?

Re: Who uses hammocks for beds?

FYI I have no intentions of co-sleeping in the hammock. I just posted here since it's our sleeping forum :)

The website I was looking at showed maya wrap type material. Not at all like a typical net with a bar across the top and bottom we're used to seeing outdoors in the US. It claimed it was better for your back than a mattress because it doesn't create pressure points.

I have a really cool hammock packed up somewhere. I got it in Peru and it's gorgeoussss. I should dig it out and find a place to hang it. :think
