Can't believe it. In my country (Finland) corporal punishment is forbidden alltogether since the end of 1980s. Corporal punishment at school, however, was forbidden by an Imperial Law, when Finland was still a part of Imperial Russian.

My Grandmother was a school girl when hitting children at school become illegal.

I didnt know it was still legal in some states here either.When I was young was legal but only with parental permission first and never heard of younger grades being involved :( We didnt even have K in PS back then

Here, when we want to say that something is really backwards, ancient and old fashioned we call it "like in the days of Imperial Russian". It is a kind of proverbial expression.

It's a strange idea to think that the Imperial Russian was more enlightened in some aspects than some Western states today...

These states still allow it.
I know when I was growing up in PA it was allowed but I believe a parents permission was required.

A parent's permission is supposedly required in GA too :nails

Makes me thankful we homeschool, given that apparently teachers/admin can override the parent here despite the law, but I feel sick for the child it happened to and for my friends whose children are in public school.

A's elementary school allows it. There is an opt-out form though. We're in TX.

Tennessee allows each district to decide. I believe it's 5-7 districts that allow corporal punishment with parental consent.
I'm hoping we can make it illegal across the state soon.

Even in the states where it's illegal it is sometimes allowed in private schools...at least in NY.

I do wonder how many parents read the handbooks/disciplinary policies, etc.

Even if I was all for corporal punishment, I would never, ever, consent to another person to use it on my child. How many parents unknowingly give permission because they don't bother reading the "fine print".

My little,private school in PA allowed cp and it wasn't in fine print. A's school policy is also pretty easy to find in the handbook. I have a feeling school's want to avoid the ire of parents if possible.

One would hope all private schools would do that. I was being a bit sarcastic with the "fine print" comment though. Basically saying sometimes people don't pay attention or read thoroughly.
