Sewing questions

I have several pairs of pants and some shirts that I need to shorten. I also need to take in the waists on some of R’s shorts. Can anyone recommend a tutorial? The shirts are button down shirts with cuffs. I kind of just want to leave them hemmed and just turn them up, rather then cutting them and hemming. Would it be worth it to buy one of those hand held sewing machines for this kind of sewing? For all these years, I have been doing all of this by hand. If you could recommend a brand of sewing machine, that would be great, I can google, but am not feeling up to the task. Thanks in advance.

Those hand held sewing things are awful. Don't waste your money.
I think turning up and hemming the shirts would depend on how much is being taken up. You don't want it too bulky.
You could cut across the middle somewhere and just do a simple seam, if you don't mind that look (or if you are doing 2 different colour shirts, switch halves to make it a feature)

As for the shorts, are they elastic waist? If so, cut open a hoke in the part the elastic goes and shorten the elastic. If it's a normal waist, I normally just put in a couple of darts (and undo them as they grow)
Janome and Brother are great sewing machines for beginners. And I'm not sure over there, but most places here offer a free first sewing lesson when you buy a machine.

I made 4-5 long sleeved shirts into short sleeve shirts and turned 3 pairs of pants into shorts. Not too shabby.
