Is 15 months too late to start- will we now be early potty trainers instead of late ECers?

I'm going to explore those links- thanks

We've been EC since ds was 7 mo, and since he's been walking it's certainly been more of a challenge. One of his "new" cues is to run off someplace private, like behind the couch, to do his business. Good luck to everyone! (and congrats on your first catch :clap)

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

Hello!

I joined this forum specifically looking for other ladies doing EC.

My daughter is 10 1/2 months old and we just started doing EC 2 1/2 weeks ago. Its going so much better than I expected! I've been so enthusiastic about it. She managed to use her potty the very first day and we've managed to get her to use it every day anywhere from 1-3 times! I'm still not very good at figuring out when she is going to go, I just put her on the potty when she wakes up as that is usually the only time I can figure it out. I've tried to get her on it for a poop too but I can't move fast enough.

I've noticed, in this short time, how she has already become more upset when her diaper is wet. I was getting confused for a bit as she'd give the same annoyed cry as when she is tired but unwilling to sleep... but it wasn't anywhere near naptime. I finally figured out she was wet.

How do you go about figuring out your baby's signs that they are about to go?

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

With a 10 mo old there is a LOT to timing. About 10 min after waking up, after eating. Also, before we leave the house, before we transition to another activity....

And here's a BIG cue at my house....

any time Mama has to pee. :D

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

I was wondering if I should be sitting her on the potty more often or not. I was worried that if she sat on it too often she'd stop liking it. But, maybe it would help.

Thanks for the advice, I will try and get her on it more often. I was also thinking of maybe starting a log of when I change wet diapers and then I might get an idea of when might be the best time to sit her on the potty.

Thanks for the links! They are quite helpful. WE started eC with dd at 11.5 months when I first heard of it.

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

So for the last couple of months we've ec'd when at home. Basically let baby boy (now 17 months) run around nekkie- and we taught him the word peepee when he went and caught his poos (he's really regular) for the last month. Well I finally got around to buying him two baby bjorn pottys- and he loves them. he is now requesting to be nekkie so he can sit and he pees on them alot. when he runs around nekkie he hasn't peed on the floor since he got them. Now he still pees and poos in his diaper and it really doesn't bother him. So I'm wondering what the next step is.
Do we just be happy with our nekkie success and keep it as it is. Dipes while out and sleeping- nekkie when home?
Or do we start trying to put some kinda underwear on him and teach him how to pull it up and down?

Did you use a pot when you started EC? How does the baby bjorn differ in the other potties?

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

we had a seat adapter from big brother- you know the thing that goes on the big people toilet to make it smaller. what he likes about the baby bjorn is that it can be out in the family room next to his toys so we don't have to run off into the bathroom. i don't think that it is really any different then any other potty- just simple small and able to be moved from room to room.

olivegod2 03-06-2006 01:43 PM

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

I see. We are thinking About getting one of the toilet seat adapters for dd so she can get used to going potty on the big toilet. Like yesterday, we were at a friends house and she signed a few times that evening that she had to go potty so I put her on the toilet seat-and also I would ask her if she has to go potty. at home, we use a potty chair. Now while we are in public, I wait till she signs (which I know I should probably ask more) then I take her to the bathroom. But I hold her up over the toilet seat facing it. It is much more challenging to do. It is a hit or miss with that.

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

I'm so glad this is a topic all to itself now. We started EC early on but I didn't do it regularly. We just started in earnest about a week ago and she is now signing potty several times a day. We caught 3 pps and 1poo poo today! Yea! She also liked to just go sit and have me read to her or let her throw tissue in the potty. She likes to tear it into little pieces and throw each one in. :D I'm trying to make a point of reading to/playing with her other than when she's on the potty too so she doesn't think she has to go potty just to get my undivided attention. Oh yeah she's 12 mo old.

wow, there are people who EC here too?!?
We've been trying with my son since he was 6 months. Just recently we also started using cloth diapers part time. I think now he gets upset when he's wet (and in cloth) but I never think of that reason for his fussiness until after the fact. I really need to get more clued in to him!

I am trying to start EC with dd 10 1/2 months. She likes to sit on her potty while she's wearing her diaper but not without it. She'll sit on the big toilet with me holding her but she won't go. Then when I take her off and lay her down to put the diaper back on, she goes. :td What do I do now? I suppose holding her longer on the pot, but she doesn't seem to get it yet. She loves to flush :laughtears and pulls on the handle saying fwwsh :lol

Have you tried getting her to pee in her diaper while sitting on the toilet? Sometimes that's a good transitional step.

As I am from UK the sign maybe different. I use the toilet sign which i was taught to put my indew finger right hand to the palm of left hand.

I recommend megansmama, laying a nappy in the bottom of the potty. That's what i read somewhere.

Well, Luke is 12.5 months and I don't have a little potty, but I'm considering getting one and trying this out...maybe using a sign? Never really thought about ECing part-time until I read Kym's recent post. I wonder how this'll work! :grin

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

Glad to see this thread here because I'm finally figuring out this EC thing, with my third babe being 10mo. :lol She's waking up dry and peeing in the potty first thing in the morning (she squirms and crawls all over me, that's her signal LOL). I also got her to pee in the potty two other times today so we only used three diapers. :jawdrop I'm wondering if it will last though as she's madly crawling, cruising and wanting to walk really badly. And wanting to talk.

I'm waiting for the Joseph Garcia book to come in at the library, is there a website with baby signs?

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

I am interested in EC for my 13 month old boy. Just not sure where to start. He hates having his diaper changed, is very predictable with BMs, and is taking off his own diaper all the time, especially after he poops. Any tips at all? Do I buy a potty chair? What types of signs should I be looking for with peeing? We're at my parents house this week, so I'm going to wait until I am at my house to start so he can go diaper free. What do you do when you need to leave the house?

Mert 09-18-2007 11:47 AM

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

More questions... I know (mostly) when ds is in the process of having a bm. So, do I just scoop him up and plop him on the seat? It seems that by the time I get his clothes and dipe off he'll be done and honestly, like I'd be "interrupting". Couldn't that cause other problems? It seems like lots of you are letting your little guys run around naked. Hmmm... :shrug

JavaMama 09-19-2007 08:27 AM

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

Hmm, Mert I do that if I realize what's going on I will go ahead and undress dd to put her on the potty as she'll happily poop in the potty. I think if she was resistant to pooping in the potty, I would worry about it causing constipation, but she finishes up on the potty just fine.

The more naked days we are more likely to use the potty more. :shrug In fact, she just came and hung onto my leg grunting while I was typing and when I asked her if she needed to potty she got still (her way of saying yes) and peed for me.

We don't EC when we're not at home usually, though I have tried at my mom's. Since we use the Baby Bjorn Little Potty, dd isn't comfortable with big people toilets. ;)

JavaMama 09-19-2007 08:28 AM

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

Oh, I was going to clarify that I bring the potty seat to dd and then remove her pants/diaper so all she has to do is sit. So it's not as big of an interruption as running her to another room. ;)

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

A lot of times I "catch" poops when dd is grunting and tooting, just *before* she actually goes, KWIM? Every once in a while she will have already gone, and I put her on the potty and she'll finish up. Or not, if she was done to begin with. Basically, I put her on the potty whenever I change her diaper, and/or whenever I think she needs it, and we'll read books or sing songs till she gets up and starts to walk away.

ThreeKids 03-19-2008 07:47 PM

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

I might need to join you guys soon.

DD battles rashes. She had one at 3 mos. that wrecked her nerves and she spontaneously started giving me cues that gave me a head start to the changing table. (By wrecked nerves I mean her cues, even after the rash was clear, seemed like a fear reaction.) Sometimes, she'd get there and still be dry so I just put a potty there. I never intended to do infant pottying, but DD just insisted on it. She gradually started letting me know her diaper was wet after the fact, but would insist on being changed immediately until she recently learned to crawl and had better things to do.

Even in the dry winter with breathable covers and pre-folds, we still fight yeast setting in. I'm really nervous about this summer when we have to deal with humidity.

One thing we might just have to bite the bullet on is that she gives no cues at all for poops. They have always been frequent and loose, even after starting solids, and you just hear a splat. To win the yeast battle, though, I may be willing to let her go au naturel this summer. These carpets are about kaput anyway.

I'm really bad for noticing cues. My kids just learn to be really obvious so the important things balance out.

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

I never thought I would, but it looks like I'm in the early stages of ECing. PJ always wakes up dry, and today I thought I'd stick her on AJ's training potty to see if she'd go, which she totally did. I did it again after nap and again she had no problem--in fact, she got a cute little look on her face, a cross between a smile and being surprised. :giggle So I'm thinking, why not give this a try? She's 14.5 mos. so we'll have a lot of unlearning to do, but :shrug might as well, right? Maybe it will inspire AJ to start using the potty, since at almost 3.5 she has absolutely NO interest whatsoever. :rolleyes

I do have a couple questions for other late ECers. I'm not comfortable letting PJ run around naked since we're going to be putting the house on the market soon, plus the carpet in the new house is really nice and I don't want to mess it up. We use cloth diapers already, but I use pocket dipes, and unless she's *just* gone and I can feel the heat of the pee, you can't really tell just by feeling the outside of the dipes whether or not they're wet. Any recommendations for how to proceed with figuring out when to put her on the potty? I read the link in the first email, and it said they often go every 15 minutes or so after waking up, but I'm concerned that if I keep removing her from what she's playing with to put her on the potty she's going to get mad and start to resent it. Should I just go with once an hour? What do you do if the diaper is already wet when you take it off? Just set her on anyway? Do you let them get up when they want to, or do you try to keep them on there for a certain amount of time?

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

I've been pretty lazy with EC this time around. Plus I don't think it helps that Danny seems so much more cranky than what Timmy was, about EC. It's almost like Danny digs in his heals, when I offer the potty. and then sometimes I just result to the disposies. :blush

WI Mama05 07-06-2009 10:56 AM

Re: EC: Late Starters (6 mos. +) thread

I think we are starting late ECing right now.

DD3 started waking up for naps dry so remembering threads on here I started holding her over the potty and 60% of the time she does! YAY!

I have a little bjorn type potty that I got at a garage sale for $.25 that I've tried, but she likes to try to stand or crawl off of it :giggle

I realized that she fusses and then stops at times. I'm usually so busy it's "just a minute" and then I realize she's done, but that her diaper is also soaked. I need to get better at the cues.

What age did everyone start using the sign with their DC and at what point did you use it? Before you go to the potty, on the potty, when they potty?
