weighted blankets

PJ's therapist recommended we get one of these for her. I know nothing about them. Anyone have a brand they'd recommend? How do I know what weight to get?

I just made an adjustable one. The recommendations I've seen are 10% of body weight plus one pound.

Re: weighted blankets

I ordered one from Etsy. I wanted particular fabric, plus I wanted glass beads instead of plastic. Not many make them with glass beads. (It's fine, like sand, but well contained within the blanket.)

Monkey loves it! I ordered it somewhat big so if she wanted it extra heavy, we could double it up. (She loves it when she lays on the couch, then I lay on top of her, then Kitten lays on top of me!:jawdrop:giggle)

My only problem is that I have not been brave enough to wash it. I'm afraid there's no way my washing machine could handle it!

Z's new one is this sand kind of weight. It does provider deeper pressure than the plastic beads. It is a 9lb blanket and it DID break our dryer belt. Our top load washer is fine with it, but we have to lay it flat to dry. I would not wash it in a front load washer.

Our 5lb sensacalm blanket has been washed several dozen times and is just fine. I can even put a few other things in with it and it doesn't affect my washer/dryer.

This is the Etsy shop where we got Big J's: https://www.etsy.com/shop/AnjasCreations

We've had his for 5 years. It gets washed often, and it's still in good condition, so I think that says a lot about the quality of her work. I custom ordered it to be made in fabric I chose, and I got cotton on both sides instead of the minky, because he is hot-natured.
