How easy would it be

to add elastic to a pair of pants?

I have a pair of yoga-type pants that I would like to alter so they work better for Zumba. The fit well but since there is no way to tighten them, they slip down. They have enough of a waistband that I think I could turn it down around some elastic. Reasonable?

that should be pretty easy. Just remember they will be considerbly shorter in the crotch when you roll down the waistband. ;)

Not having seen them, I can think of two possible solutions.

The first depends on the waist band. If it is that typical yoga pant waist band where it is a strip of fabric folded in half and then sewn to the pants, then you could use the waist band as a casing for the elastic. Just cut a little slit on the inside and run the elastic through.

If it doesn't or you don't think having elastic all the way around would be comfortable or fit right, the other option is to add elastic to the inside of the waist area. All you do is place the elastic where you want it, then stretch it to fit the fabric as you are sewing it on. The upside to this method is that you could put it all the way around or just a few pieces in strategic locations. The downside is that the elastic isn't hidden so depending on the fit or how you move, it might show. I've never had it show but I've always used it to decrease the size of elastic that is already in place rather than an item that wasn't designed for an elastic waist. Another plus though, is that you can just removed the elastic (from either method really) if it doesn't work right.

That's what I would do too. :yes

In fact I have a pair of yoga pants I should probably do this to...
