spanking babies???
The Pearls *do* advocate this, do they not? Are there any links that actually say this? Someone online is asking, and I can't find anything...but I was sure I had heard that before:scratch

Re: spanking babies???
I know Ive read they advocate spaking or hitting babies for fighting diaper changes.

yes, they do...in one of their books they tell of 'switching' their four month old daughter for crawling too close to the stairs.

Re: spanking babies???
Oh dear... searching for that brings up some really questionable stuff... and not about babies. This will be fun:-/

At four months she was too unknowing to be punished for disobedience. But she can still be hit with a switch? It’s just semantics. this part??? Isnt this saying that the book says a 4 month old should not be punished??? |
Re: spanking babies???
I think they differentiate between training and punishment...I'm not sure what their word is for the latter. Training is still using the switch though.

I saw something at "no greater joy" about potty training from birth and it was talking the difference between that and ec. It was all about how cool it was that your five-month-old could obey you in going on the potty. :sick Now I know why the ec people are so quick to point out we're not potty training infants.

You will find ammunition here.

Re: spanking babies???
Their book says that you should begin spanking as soon as a child shows a temper or disobeys...and that starts as young as 4 months of age.:sick Definately should be spanked by 6 months for wiggling during diaper changes, crying when put down, touching anything you've said 'no' about, crying when you say 'no' etc. One example in the book is spanking a 7mo for what they called 'pitching a fit' - crying himself to sleep while the mother rocked him.:scratch

Re: spanking babies???
The important thing is to distinguish between spanking and training. The Pearls use this kind of doublespeak. They do not advocate spanking babies because they are too young to be punished. They advocate training babies. Now, to the untrained eye, they look exactly the same, striking flesh with a switch. But the important thing is the motive. Also, the consistency. So, once you read his book, he will explain it with his good 'ole boy, down home humor and it will all make sense. :doh Anyway, this is why Pearl followers claim that he doesn't teach spanking babies when he clearly teaches switching them. :doh
