If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I decided that it is too much trouble to throw the disposable wipe away while I am sticking the rest of the diaper in the diaper pail, so I am going to cut up our old flannel receiving blankets and use them for cloth wipes.
Cloth wipe users- What kind of solution do you use? Back when I used to make my own wipe solution 8-10 years ago, I used to use water/oil/babymild liquid soap, and some lavendar/TTO. Now, I am seeing that Lavender/TTO might not be a good mix for babies. I remember reading an article a while back saying something about it, basically dismissing it, but then I was shopping for some premade solution for fun, and I saw some that said "TTO/Lavender free", as if that was a good selling point. What do you use, and how do you store it? What is your changing routine? |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I just use water. I wet them as I need them.

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I use plain old water. :shrug3

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
what's wrong with lavender/TTO for babies??
I used to use water, vinegar, and a little baby soap to cut the vinegar smell. I've been too lazy/too much of a procrastinator to cut up new wipes and do it this time around. which I'm kicking myself for. |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
We use a kind called Cheeky Wipes (think they're a UK brand) and you just soak them in water with a couple of drops of oil that the compant sells. Currently using a Lavender/Camomile blend, but they also have a Mandarin/TTO blend. I hadn't heard that Lavender/TTO was bad. I wouldn't put it directly on their skin, but I'm using just a couple of drops in water that soaks about 25 wipes at a time, so it's really not much.
I've also made up my own solution using water with a spoonful of baby shampoo, a spoonful of baby lotion and spoonful of baby oil. It smelt amazing and was really nice to use, but actually the water and couple of drops of oil works just as well. I pre-soak my wipes, but you can also store them dry and spray the solution on to them just before use. |

I honestly don't remember. I have been using water right now, but I don't have it in anything. I am just having to use the sink, and that is a hassle. |

I store them dry and wet them when I need them, I just use water.
---------- Post added at 03:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:56 PM ---------- When DS2 was smaller, I had a small bottle filled with water so I didnt have to run to the sink. |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I used chamomile tea with a drop of lavender in it. Presoaked and squeezed out the wipes, so all I had to do was grab and go
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I use water, and store them wet in a wipes warmer (I think it's Prince Lionheart brand?) they've never gotten smelly or mildewed.

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I asked this *exact* question just a few months ago, got various answers and so now I'll add mine...:D
I keep all the dry wipes in a big, empty plastic wipes container and each morning I grab a handful, wet them and stick them in a smaller, travel-size plastic wipes container. If I run out I wet a few more. I was using the big container for awhile, but they DID get moldy/mildewy smelling really fast that way. I only used water though. :) I use some wipes that were made for me by a GCMer. one side is super soft and the other side is regular material, not so fluffy. I like the 4" square ones. ANything bigger than that was too big. (I started out with just a couple baby washcloths. WAY too big for now, but maybe when N is a toddler. :shrug ) |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I keep a little spray bottle of wipe solution, and spray the butt/wipes as needed. I really like Super Stars by PureBebe and the solution that Blissful Booty makes. :)

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I was another just plain ole water :)
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I use Baby Bits in a spray bottle, and spray on her bottom when I go to clean her. I have in the past used California Baby Diaper Area Rinse, diluted with water to make it last longer.

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I just use water. :)

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I think there were some studies a few years back that said that lavender and tto might be endocrine disruptors and could cause breast growth in boys... I seem to remember the studies using really excessive amounts of the oils though :shrug3
I use water most of the time and a pre-made wipe solution when out and about. I use to use a water/soap/oil solution that worked great and have also used a lot of different pre-made solutions, but we were having a lot of yeast issues, so I cut them out just to be safe. |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
warm water

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
We used to carry small squeeze bottle I got in the travel section of target. I would fill it with fresh water every morning and wet my wipes with it at every change. Currently if we are out we use disposable wipes but I wash them with my wipes and then store them under the kitchen sink for dirty house cleaning jobs. I no longer buy paper towels because we just use cloth towels for most things and the cleaned wipes for things I want to throw away. At home I just take my daughter to the tub and wash her off. Lately this works best because otherwise she tries to get away.

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I use plain water, too. I use the peri bottle I got after DS was born to hold the water and then I wet the wipes as needed.
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
Water with a drop of Grapefruit Seed Extract. No more mildew and also helped clear up any redness.
We used a wipes warmer and I'd dip the wipes in it, but I've also heard of many moms using a pump thermos and rewarming it once or twice a day. I think I'm going to try that next time. |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
We just use water, too. Wet as needed. Super extra grody kids get hosed down in the shower, but that doesn't happen very often any more. :lol
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
Another plain water user. I keep a small squeezy bottle topped up and wet the wipes as needed.
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
We use water on the go, but we use a wipe warmer and use honey bun drops. We love it and it's great for chapped or dry skin.
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I just use a washcloth and water IF I use anything. Most of the time, if baby poos, she gets a bath-- if she doesn't need a full bath, I give her a "bootie bath" in the sink.

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I'm impressed...I totally toss disposable wipes into the diaper pail and pick them out of the dryer. :bag I have beautiful, lovely fabric sitting in the closet to be made into wipes...but, sigh...

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
you can reuse the (washed) sposie wipes as long as they're not broken down. some brands hold out better than other. I did that for awhile till i got cloth wipes
TTO/lavender can also be an irritant to certain babes, especially if they've got a rash. Ive not had a problem, but have heard of others whose babies have I also just use plain water. Ive always just ran to the sink to wet at change time, but it is a slight hassle. I'd like to have a container with an easy lid that i could wet the cloth and ring out into, i think id be happy with that. I dont like using a bottle of water, since i dont like dripping wipes. I do keep one in the bag though thats used for when we're somewhere without water to use. |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
just water here too. :yes
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I use just water in a wipes warmer and wet the wipes as needed.

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
water at home, California Baby spray when out (spray bottom and wipe with a dry wipe)
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I used to do a mix of baby soap, witch hazel, and water. It had a nice smell and cleaned well.
Now I just use plain water. I wet the cloths when I need them. Much easier and still cleans well. :) Yes, as Kammy said, the concern with TTO and lavender is their alleged estrogenic effects. The study in question has been widely debated, so who knows. I use them very sparingly on my own boys. |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
Ia own about 30 OBV/flannel wipes which I LOVE for my wipe solution I use LuSa Baby Wipe Juice

I've had my bottle of solution going on 9 months now (at least) and I still have at least 3/4 of the bottle left. Deanna ETA I do of course have all girls so the TTOil/ Lavender thing doesn't concern me as much. I also tried doing plain water even just wetting as we went but we ALWAYS ended up with bad rashes.. HAve no idea why but the solution stopped all that. http://www.lusaorganics.com/v/vspfil...s/clear1x1.gif |
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
Interesting about the rashes. I used disposables (diapers and wipes) while on vacation last week and the rashes really cleared up except for one morning he accidentally sat in a poopy for a while, which healed quickly with a good wipe and a day of Desitin. Stripping the cloth diapers helped a ton but he still seems prone to rashes, especially after poops. (They look like contact dermatitis...he gets a rash wherever the poo touches, not just a ring of red although I have to wonder if there's some allergy/sensitivity I just can't figure out.) Now I'm wondering if using a gentle wipe solution rather than just water would help that...

Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
I just use water, baby oil, and baby wash. I don't use TTO but I know many moms that do!
|
Re: If you use Cloth Wipes.....
The main thing about lavendar and TTO for us is that we're allergic to both. :doh
I recommend washcloths sooner than flannel. Old baby towels can be cut up, or any washcloths...baby or adult. |
