Open sores can get infected by staph. I knew someone with shingles who did get a secondary infection of staph on the blisters. However, being shingles, I should note that he didn't know what it was, and had tried several different soaps and lotions and ointments, trying to figure out what the rash was.
His son that caught CP from those shingles did not have staph.
