I can recommend a few titles from German publishers that were pretty user-friendly and didn't rely on translation at all between German and English.

Okay, for American textbooks, I've taught with Deutsch Aktuell and previewed Komm mit! I actually preferred Komm mit! for communicative activities, but I'm not sure they're still in print. You might be able to find them used somewhere. The best thing about both of those textbooks were the videos that went with them, but they're hard to get second-hand and the publishers charge an arm and a leg.
