I like this idea.
My MIL has 3 little avocado trees that are a year or two old. I think she intentionally started one with the toothpicks over a cup of water method, and then found the other two growing in her compost pile and potted them. They look like they're still a long way off from actually producing avocados (only about 3 or 4 feet tall), but she's in KY and has to bring them in the garage in the winter, so I'm sure that stunts their growth.
I've tried to start so many avocado seeds in a cup of water. I only had 1 ever grow, and it wound up dying when I potted it.
