We grill a ton and upgraded our grill last year to a komodo joe. Before that we had gas grills- and those were fine.

We made a fire pit out of landscaping stones (those ones that are slightly wedge shaped). You would need to dig out the grass first. We put it out with the hose when we are ready to come in

You could also consider a chiminea which would be more portable.
