I agree. On a tight budget, you can try to add items to the weekly grocery trip to stretch out the cost, and can try to choose a science with mostly household items, but I have always been frustrated with science on years I didn't think to prioritize having the time and material for experiments, or didn't realize that the cost adds up to where kits aren't such a bad idea. They will forget what they read. But they often remember experiments, especially if they thought through making a hypothesis and having variables.
