I'm going to recommend Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. It, too, is free, and sometimes it picks up things that my paid AVG misses. The only thing is that you'll probably have to update it "manually", and it won't run automatically. It can be purchased as well.

I had Avast on my laptop, and found it used a lot of resources when it ran, so I ended up uninstalling it.
