canning soup
Can I just can my typical soup recipes in a pressure canner (if I get my hands on one...), or do I need to follow a special recipe? My friend who owns a pressure canner says I need to follow a proper recipe for canning soup, but I was just planning on making my usual soups (I can tell you the ingredients in them, if it matters...) and then canning them...

Re: canning soup
from what I've looked up, it seems like vegetables are good, but pasta, milk, etc. is a no - which is fine, because those things aren't in my soups. BUT one of my soup recipes contains peanut butter (I always use the natural, just-peanuts kind). would that work for canning?

Re: canning soup
I've canned from recipes and my own concoctions (the chili worked great!). I read one recipe where you add the milk while you are heating the base to serve. I think the peanut butter would be fine. I seem to recall reading that all bones should be removed from broths or canned meat. I love the convenience of canned soups but haven't done it for awhile.

Re: canning soup
No milk or pasta like you mentioned. The pasta gets too mushy and milk will go bad and ruin your soup. I can my usual recipes for soup, but most of mine are just a standard meat stock or vegetable stock base. I don't think peanut butter would be a problem, provided it's the natural kind.
Blessings, Kelly

Re: canning soup
thanks for your advice! Now, if I could track down a pressure canner... they're impossible to find around here!
