Playful parenting for the win
I decided it was a great idea to take two tired and hungry children shopping to fill up shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Ivy held up really well, but my nephew started to lose it at the end. He kept trying to get Lego sets that were war related or just violent. Each time I told him no and he started sighing and rolling his eyes at me.
I started to get irritated with him for getting an attitude over this in no small part because we already discussed this. (That I was hungry just amplified this). I was ready to lay down the law and force the issue, when out of nowhere I suddenly had a better idea. I told him I still feel like he respects me. If he wants to convey his anger and disgust he needs to sigh from the depths of his soul, go limp so everyone can see how horrible I am and put some umph into rolling his eyes or there was just no point to it. He looked startled, so I demonstrated and as Ivy cracked up and egged us both on. My nephew did a few eye rolls and deep sighs and then laughed. I asked him if he could hear me and he said he could. I reminded him of the rules that came with the shoe boxes and told him I understood why he was so disappointed, but this was what we had to do if we wanted to give kids Christmas presents with this group. We left the Lego section and went to the Hot Wheels section without any more drama. Some boy is going to be set for toy cars for some time as he decided that there should be enough to share or even give away to a friend.

I like to do that to my kids too. If you're gonna be all eye-rolly and attitudey, you better put some real effort and zeal into it or it's just not worth it.

Exactly. Since I am the only one in the family that is not going to smack you for it, get your money's worth.
