Juice/teeth situation and fluid/bowel (10 yr old)
He's had trouble drinking plain water since a toddler. He likes cranberry juice cocktail, I try to buy the one with no high fructose corn syrup, but it still has either a good amount of natural sugar from juice or cane sugar depending on the brand. Still in all, it's WAY BETTER THAN GATORADE! -which was all he would drink at one time!
He needs his fiber powder (called "galactan") every day or his bowels don't move (it's natural, not a man made chemical), but he only wants it in cranberry juice or some other sweet juice. Lately I've been hearing from his dentist that we really need to cut back on or even eliminate juice, due to plaque on teeth and cavities. I feel bad that I ever got into this habit of giving him juice. what would you do? the gradual approach? meaning half juice half water, then up the amount of water gradually until you're at plain water with only maybe a sprig of juice for flavor? He is adopted, was exposed to narcotics in the womb, and has a very finicky, picky eating style.

if he will tolerate the 50/50 do that, but you may need to start with 75%juice 25%water.
i would also try diluting it with things like cranberry fruit or herbal teas too, and occasionally offering those types of drinks instead.

Would he drink carbonated water? I know it's expensive to buy it bottled, but now you can buy one of those machines and make it yourself very inexpensively, if that'll work for him.
Can you mix carbonated water with the cranberry juice to start diluting it? It feels so different going down, and maybe he'll enjoy the bubbles! I make myself a "root beer" using the root beer flavored stevia drops and carbonated water. It is by no means as tasty as a real root beer, but it's really not bad. I actually really DO NOT like stevia. But this particular root beer thing that I make is quite satisfying. (Just add in some drops and keep tasting and adding until you like the flavor.) ---------- Post added at 02:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:41 PM ---------- You can also teach him how to gargle (fun!) and rinse and spit after drinking sugary drinks. My kids think this is fun. And gargling loudly is actually good for brain stimulation.
