Positive Discipline - Week 2
Encouragement
http://blog.positivediscipline.com/2...ged-child.html and in case you missed the link at the bottom of the page, here it is again - there are some great examples of encouraging things to say https://parentingfromscratch.wordpre...o-say-to-kids/ Are you good at encouragement?I don't believe that I am. I find that I most often feel overwhelmed or discouraged myself and that isthe words I speek. This week I want to set an intention to be an encouragement to my kids, to praise their effort and accomplishments rather than be critical and point out ways they could improve (aka what they did wrong).

Re: Positive Discipline - Week 2
I think I am good at encouraging, but with my ds1, anything not positive, positive, positive all the time effects him 10 times more than any encouragement. Even if it's not harsh or mean at all. So while I do encourage well, it's often not enough for HIM. I'd love to work on this more this week.

Re: Positive Discipline - Week 2
Wow. I really needed to read these. Thank you so much for posting. Are you doing a week by week support thread? If so, I want to join in. My kids need this, and therefore, I need to work on myself. I really want to be a better encourager!

Re: Positive Discipline - Week 2
I think I'm quite good at encouraging, BUT I'm also very good at criticising Or just being irritable and frustrated
That list of ideas is a good one. I'll come back to it a few times this week and make sure I'm focusing on those things. It will be a challenge to offer encouragement when I'm feeling frustrated or annoyed.

Re: Positive Discipline - Week 2
This is timely. I am not good at encouragement, for children or adults. I never have been. I am excellent at criticism. I can tell you what you did wrong, how you did it wrong, and how to fix it. But encourage you? That's what other people (those feeler types) are for. Not a great model for parenting.
I like the scripts. That is exactly what I need. I can't think of this stuff on my own. I want to build my children up, not tear them down. I don't want them to grow up feeling like they can't do anything right in my eyes.

Re: Positive Discipline - Week 2
Some people have a harder time with encouragement because they just don't have words of affirmation naturally as a way they express love. Nothing wrong with you if it's not natural to you. I think it's awesome we can learn how though. That list is an awesome tool!

Re: Positive Discipline - Week 2
This is one that comes fairly easily to me. I don't always remember to do it, but when it's missing it's obvious and (for me) easy to remedy, and DD really responds positively.
