Re: 2015 Garden Planning
I finished planting Friday night. Yesterday and today weve gotten quite a bit of rain and I'm hoping the raised beds keep my garden safe our soil can be quite clay like but is still decent at the moment. Hoping it dries out a bit but not too much

Me, but I'm not sure I'm an expert at it.

Re: 2015 Garden Planning
I didn't think it was hard at all (well, if you don't count that I actually planted the canes upside down and had to dig them up and replant them the right way ). You dig a trench with a high middle to rest the canes with roots on and then fill in with part sticking above (the package should say), water and you're good to go. I planted them in a raised bed. I think about 60% of the canes actually grew. Depending on what type of canes you get, the first year, you don't harvest any, but usually the second or third year you can. Each year the yield has gotten a little bigger. I have mulched it quite a bit too with leaves and bark mulch. I have my asparagus planted in with strawberries but I've since learned that they don't like to compete with other plants needing water. Cut the asparagus while it is pretty young and at first I don't let anything seed out or flower so it will produce for some time (if they do flower/seed I cut them off and throw them away). When the yield gets quite a bit less, let some of the stocks seed or flower to where you eventually stop picking and let them all flower and seed to produce energy for the next year's crop. The harvest season is a few weeks to one month. Keep an eye on it when it's producing asparagus because it can go from one day being a pretty, edible asparagus plant to one that is well on it's way to seeding/flowering. I think that the canes I bought were a mix of male and female, which I think means the male ones produce fruit and the female ones seed. I think you can get all male plants so I don't know how that would work. There's quite a bit of good info on asparagus planting online that is probably much better than Charla's version.

Re: 2015 Garden Planning
ETA: I couldn't think of the right term for the flowering. It doesn't actually have flowers but it develops into frilly fronds.

I sprayed everything with neem oil yesterday. One of my apple trees had aphids so I just sprayed everything because I mixed so much.
The sugar snap peas are starting to blossom and we've had one ripe strawberry. |

Re: 2015 Garden Planning
Everything is sprouting at least a little
We had a few ripe strawberries but it seems the birds nibble at them in hanging baskets because one one has been eaten by us

Re: 2015 Garden Planning
We've been enjoying our spinach and onions, and the carrots are coming along nicely. Weeded the second half of the garden today and planted the cucumbers and zucchini. I still have space so I might try tomatoes. We eat a lot of Greek salad lately.

Re: 2015 Garden Planning
We ended up doing sunflowers, a few giant pumpkins, romaine, spinach, green onions, carrots, green beans, snap peas, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and sweet mini peppers.

Re: 2015 Garden Planning
I finished the garden over the weekend, adding cherry tomatoes, basil, strawberries, and pumpkins. Now to keep it all weeded and in line! Last summer I was "great with child" and the weeds and zucchini both attempted a complete garden takeover. The pumpkin joined in as well. It was utter madness.
