fevers - how long before seeking help?
We have had the plague here. Dd16 missed a week of work. She has a fever & cough. Fever has been around 102 for at least 5 days. Advil brings it down, but it goes right back up. She is not dehydrated, that I can tell. I tend to be very "let it ride," but this has been going on for a week. When do I worry/take her in?

fevers - how long before seeking help?
Our dr recommends a week, and that's generally what i tend to go with, as most viral stuff tends to be done in 4-5 days tops, although we did have one that lasted a full 7 days but the kids did not have any associated symptoms with the fever.
ETA I don't think I'd do ER unless she is having a hard time catching her breath/etc but being a holiday weekend I'd probably call the on call dr tomorrow if she still feels crummy and see what they suggest (urgent care vs wait til tues). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
How is her energy/breathing? If fever starts after a week of cough, rather than at beginning, I tend to think pneumonia, but not always. My ds has had almost 2 weeks of a cold and cough and fever off and on starting a week ago. I did take him to the dr to make sure there wasn't anything else going on and he had no other issues.

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
How does she feel when the Advil is working? Within 60 min of dose? How long does she get relief?
Just based on what you wrote I probably wouldn't be worried yet. What do you do to assist antibiotics? You know, natural antibiotics? I'd start those now.

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
Fever came before cough. No trouble breathing.
Not sure how long the IB helps. I usually give it at bedtime so she sleeps easier. We do elderberry syrup, vit d, emergen'c, ginger tea, vit a, homemade chicken broth. I'm probably missing something. I've been doing all those over the last week.

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
Yes! We've been doing Mucinex. We've also done lemon-honey tea. The ginger tea has honey & lemon in it. It's super yummy.
I forgot, we started with Oscillo as soon as I could. Multiple doses. Doesn't seem to have helped much. :/ The whole house has it. She just can't shake the fever.

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
Does she usually fever well? If it's out of the ordinary for her, I'd take her in. My dd fevers to 105 and stuff is burned up.
My kids pretty much only get sick enough to be seen over holiday weekends. I'm sorry. Praying now

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
After 3 days, most doctors assume that a fever is bacterial related and likely needs antibiotics. I'd take her in to urgent care as soon as they open, or the pediatrician if they open first. No sore throat? I'd think strep with a cough and fever, but without a sore throat it seems unlikely.
If she has a stiff neck, headache, lightheadedness, or dizziness, I would not pass go and head immediately into the ER. These can be signs of meningitis or sepsis and those needs immediate treatment. And I'd go to the ER for any trouble breathing or chest pains, but you've already said she is fine there. |

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
fever+ cough my first thought is always pneumonia but that’s because every single fever plus cough lasting 72+ Hours has been pneumonia under our roof
I typically err on the side of caution and get their lungs listened to but we have really good insurance and good urgent care accessibility. Just a note. Pneumonia can be silent. Some times the coughs that are not productive but tight are actually pneumonia. I’d ask how painful it is when she coughs. Is this the child who got pertussis? And did the nuisance cough go away fully? In me experience, pertussis causes the lungs to be weak and more susceptible to pneumonia. Because of that, I’d be watching very carefully. ---------- Post added at 05:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:14 AM ---------- Fwiw, I don’t consider fever + cough in same category as regular fever. If it’s accompanied by any pain or shortness of breath we go in and insist on an x Ray. THe first pneumonia diagnosis here was a little overly dramatic so we’ve learned the hard way to refuse to be blown off BUT I have 3 kids w chronic health conditions so that may be an overreaction for a normal child

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
I took wiggle work in on day 6 of a feaver when she developed a whole body rash. They did a strep test that was negitive and sent me home saying it was viral. She ran a feaver for another 4 days.

Re: fevers - how long before seeking help?
Her fever seems to have finally broken overnight! She has energy and I believe she cleaned the kitchen this morning. She says her throat still hurts. So glad she doesn't go back to work until Tuesday.
I will definitely take her in if her fever returns at this point.
