healthy carpeting?
Does anyone know of a brand or type of carpeting that is "not so toxic"?
We need new flooring in our bedrooms and we have pros and cons for wanting to get new carpet vs. some type of hard flooring. A huge con for carpet is the toxic gasses... but I'm thinking that there are now some kinds that aren't as bad as they used to be.....? oh- and we don't have the budget for really expensive stuff either. So pure wool is probably not an option...

Re: healthy carpeting?
Do you live somewhere where it's an option to leave the windows open for a week after the carpet goes in?

a friend had carpet put in her basement and (I didn't say anything to her but) it smelled bad for a long time (a few months ) and I didn't really want my kids to play down there. They came home smelling like it. but.... it might have been a cheaper/stinkier carpet and no windows open in the basement. We'll have good cross ventilation in the rooms where we'd put it and whole house fans in the windows (already have them).

Re: healthy carpeting?
I would go for hard flooring with area rugs.Have heard of people buying carpet from places that have a warehouse stock right there and letting it outgas at warehouse for awhile. It really took several months for ours to stop smelling when moved into a rental house with ne carpet

Re: healthy carpeting?
considering hard flooring too. the thing is our room is huge. (it's a cape house with just two bedrooms upstairs so each room is huge). it has wasted space really. but real wood wood probably be $$. I also have visions of dust all over the floor all the time. our house seems so dusty lately and I'm not sure why. (more so than ever before). of course with carpeting all the dust is still there on top of the carpet but... you can't see it and it doesn't blow around. and area rugs would be $$ because the space is so large.
so..... I'm trying to talk myself into carpeting.... I do like the softness.

Re: healthy carpeting?
I hate my hard floors. They hurt. They are so hard. They are pretty. That's it.
I like carpet. Windows open helps a ton. We've bought super cheap and expensive carpeting. Both stink until they off gas the worst of it.
