Why does my dishwasher reek? - Page 2

I find that the natural stuff just can't break down food. So, residue builds up.

So, what detergent do people recommend? I've never heard of Finish. I'll look for it next time I'm at the store.

My mom always used Cascade and her septic was fine. Septic tanks are not as sensitive as people think they are especially with your size family. Most likely your septic isn't big enough for your family anyway and it will end up being pumped sooner than you think. I use Cascade packs here and lemi shine cleaner if I notice our glasses getting white film or food not breaking down.

The natural detergents, mixed with minerals from my hard water, were clogging the filter.

I used Finish all-in-one tabs. A box of 60 is $10.88 at my local Home Depot. When I was in FL for vacation it was really cheap at Publix.

How do I know it needs to be pumped?

My dad says (he installs them) that if your septic is working properly and is right size for your family it shouldn't need pumping. Ours is going on 20 years and never been pumped. My in laws pump theirs every 2 years just because they had a septic once that malfunctioned--20 years ago at a previous home.

Yeah but you bought an older house (I think that was you right) which probably has a smaller tank. You can lift the lid and look inside. If you ever smell septic smells you will know. But, it can back up. When we lived in my parents duplex it should have had a big tank but it was only 2-3 bedrooms. It couldn't handle all of us plus washing and stuff. It had to be pumped. It's not a big deal and doesn't usually cost much.

We use either finish or cascade gel tabs.
