don't make the mistake we did
we got it from a local feed store, but it was not permaguard, although it was food grade. it had so much clay in it and it was so heavy and lumpy that it was in no way good for human consumption

on the package it said DE and then in fine print with calcium bentonite 10%.

Yes, that sounds like a great deal! Like the recent poster said, though, make sure it doesn't have a lot of clay in it. It should be white with a tinge of gray . . .

I would also ask where he gets it

Joining this thread late...

I bought some DE from Azure Standard for insecticide. According to their website:

"It is strongly suggested that you use a protective mask and goggles when handling this fine powder to guard against respiratory and eye irritations. Don't apply the dust where children are likely to encounter it."

I thought this was safe to use as insecticide in the backyard with the kids around? Also,

"Use of these products in Animal Feed are suggested at 1-2% by weight of DE in ground, dry feed, and 5% by weight in stored grain."

So... Is this food grade or not? It's a 5# bag - rebagged by Azure Standard, so I have no idea what company manufactured it. It's light grey in color.

I can't tell from what you have written if it is food grade or not.... the warnings are because you don't want to inhale it... bad idea. It should say food grade..check the website...

I copied exactly what the website says. It is being sold as an insecticide, but then it has that bit at the bottom about animal feed. It doesn't say anything further about whether or not it is food grade.

If the powder is already on the ground, is it ok for kids to be near it? It seems like if it's ok to take it internally, touching it shouldn't be harmful. So I just need to keep DS away while I'm sprinkling it around so he doesn't breathe it?

(We just bought this house, the entire backyard is one big anthill, and they're all coming inside. I gotta do something, and I'd prefer something natural rather than chemical poisons.)

Maybe I'll keep this bag for insecticide only, and look into a different source for internal consumption...

This is all pretty intriguing. I bought a jar of "Outside Flea Relief" by Dr. Goodpet for my dog. I got it from Frontier and didn't really know what it was. I thought it was something to spray on the lawn, but it says to also give it to your dog internally. It is codex food-grade diatomaceous earth. Our whole family, including the dog has yeast issues and other health issues. Maybe we should try this. I would almost like to see how I react to it before I give it to my kids though. kwim?

If you are going to be dusting large amounts of it yes, goggles and a mask are a good idea--the same as ANY fine powder, though--cat litter, too, for example, releases fine clay particles that can irritate your lungs. Baby powder is very dangerous as well when dispersed in the air and can cause lung damage. If you're just sprinkling a bit and are careful not to disperse it into the air it's not a problem. Once it's down on the ground it's 100% safe. It's just the fine particulate powder in the air that can be unsafe (like any powder).

My DE has the same directions for animal feed and grain storage (and it's food-grade). My understanding is that if it's safe to give to animals, it is food grade, although it might have more clay in it than what you'd want to consume. Lots of sellers sell food-grade DE but don't specifically market it for human use. It's been used for grain storage and for animals for a long time so that's just the norm, I think.

Just went to Azure Standard's website and this is from their DE page
Quote:
These products also meet the specifications outlined in the U.S. Food Chemicals Codex (FCCV) for use as a filter aid in food processing
http://www.azurestandard.com/product.php?id=GP010 I believe this means it is food-grade. You can add it to food for storage meaning it can be consumed.

Blue-Eyed Lady--if yours is almost white like in the photo then there's little to no clay in it. Some de is brownish due to all the clay (or so I've learned).

I thought it meant that it was safe for animal feed, but the wording on the site had me confused. It is nearly white, and it's very "fluffy" in texture - it doesn't feel clay-y at all.

I sprinkled it liberally all around the house and backyard yesterday. Of course, the wind picked up just as I decided to start. I was really careful to keep the powder close to the ground so it wouldn't get airborne, and I stayed upwind (downwind? whichever way means that the wind blows the stuff away from you), and I did it while DS napped, just to be on the safe side. Hopefully bugs start dying now!

Would DE help with illness-related diarrhea? DH has been sick for days.

I believe it should. It will help clear things out, which is what his body is trying to do. If he's not already he can take a probiotic every hour as well. Coconut water (sometimes called coconut juice) is one of the best things for diarrhea as well.

That said,ds had a very long and violent bout of diarrhea for almost a week and it seemed to me as soon as he started the coconut water/juice that Lisa recommended, it started going away We were trying a million and one things that had worked in the past but nothing did it until he drank some. He didn't like it and forced himself to drink about 8 ounces and honest to God it seemed like it stopped almost instantly!
