Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
I have had success with vinegar. Spray and let dry using a fan or the sun when you can. Then repeat until it gets better. Nature's miracle works as well.

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
You can try all the above. I would also highly highly recommend an air purifier-after enzyme cleaner, a professional carpet cleaning & leaving vinegar out for 48 hours, the air purifier is what made the smell disappear.

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
buy a black light from home depot (in light bulb section) for $8 and pop the bulb into a lamp you already own...walk around at night and look for yellow/green stains....look on baseboards and carpet. white stains should not smell. unfortunately, the padding underneath white stains could smell. White stains usually indicate spills of other kids or show the area has already been cleaned.
If there are many yellow/green stains, it would be best to remove the carpet and padding and paint the floor with Kilz before you lay new flooring.

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
When we had cats, we bought a house with all concrete floors, and we bought a rug for the living room. The cats peed on it. We treated it multiple times with the enzyme cleaner. We tried vinegar. We put the wbole rug outside for a week. Nothing got the smell out. We ended up buying another rug, and our cats were not allowed in that room ever again.
I am so sorry you are having to deal with that. The enzyme cleaner can help, especially if you continue to repeat the treatments. I second the black light suggestion. That way you know where to concentrate the enzyme cleaner. But you do have to follow the instructions with soaking it. Cover it with wet towels, etc.

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
Thanks for all the ideas! Unfortunately, due to finances, I'm going to have to stick with the vinegar and baking soda I have right now. But now I have lots of good ideas for next month.

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
Did you ever get anywhere with this?
I was wondering if you're sure it's cat pee? I don't want to worry you,but I've heard that if meth has been made somewhere,it smells like cat pee really bad. |

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
I know a family that bought a cat lady's house, only in their case it was a couple. It was a gorgeous house with custom stained glass, a spiral staircase, and all kinds of awesome touches. But the couple who had owned it before had some weird ideas about all-natural living. In particular, they didn't believe in litter boxes for indoor cats. Or in neutering their toms. Plural.
Yeah. Anyway, they ended up ripping up and disposing of all of the carpet and padding and sanding the bare wood underneath to get the smell out. Lots of protective gear, they could only live in a few rooms at a time, and they had to put up with bare plywood for a while, but they got it done. Hope the vinegar and baking soda worked for you!

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
Definitely no meth. This lady was our neighbor for 3 years, really nice lady, just her and her grown, disabled son she cares for. And cats. Lots and lots of cats.
The smell is dissipating slowly. I think just having the house open and aired out is helping. And I've put a TON of vinegar on the carpets. I want to do the baking soda, but it's going to take a day when I can sprinkle it on, then leave the house so the kids don't get into it, then come home and vacuum right away. Soon.

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
Glad it's getting better. I was going to suggest Nature's Miracle, I see it's already been suggested. My mom always used vinegar. It does work, it just takes longer.

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
I have a friend coming over tomorrow. I'm embarrassed to say that I might be getting used to the smell. So I hope she'll give me an honest assessment.

Re: The cat lady used to live in my house
She's a Type 3 if there ever was one, so I trust her when she says it's bad, but not nearly as bad as it was the first time she was here, the day we were moving. So I still have some work to do, but I'm glad it's not knocking people out when they walk in the door.
