Default The cat lady used to live in my house

How do I get the smell out of the carpets?!

We just moved, I can't afford to shampoo the carpets, and the smell is horrible. I tried a few different chemicals, one designed for skunk smell, and it still reeks.

I'm going to try baking soda next, but what else can I do?

could you possibly borrow a carpet cleaner from someone? That smell is pretty foul. I know we used vinegar with one cat who peed all over but I don't remember what else we did.

Blech. I would try to incorporate TTO into whatever you do . . . although it has such a strong, distinct smell, it has a way of turning foul smells neutral.

You moved, though. Congrats!!!!

Can you get rid of it? If it's bad enough, cat pee will get all the way down into the carpet pads and even the floor boards.

If not, I'd pay to have it shampooed. By the time you keep buying different chemicals and oils and products to remove it, you could have paid for a professional cleaning.

The other problem is that after waiting a year to move in to this place, the actual move in had to be done quickly. So I didn't have time to do much before we got the furniture in, so anything I do now won't get to the carpet under the furniture.

I'll try TTO and vinegar. Though it's going to take GALLONS!

That's a good point. Though I do have lots of vinegar and baking soda already, since I use those for cleaning frequently.

Are you able to hire a carpet cleaning machine? Although that would require DH being home and able to do all the heavy work as I wouldn't recommend it for a PP woman.

Yay for moving though!

Those household and rental carpet shampooers are no match for professional truck mounted steam cleaners. That would be $ well spent IMO short of replacing the carpets.

you can also buy enzyme cleaners made especially for pet odors

http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracl...enzyme+cleaner

this is the one my mom swears by since she has old dogs that pee and poop all over her house

If you cannot get rid of the carpet (and that would be my first choice), I would get the glade odor neutralizers and leave them open. They will kill the worst of the smell until you can either rip it out of try a professional cleaning.

Enzymatic cleaners would be your best bet, IMO, but I'd also rip out as much of the carpet and padding as you possibly can if allowed.

Can you move the furniture around temporarily? Squish it all to one side of the living room to clean for a day or two, then the other? Even if someone has to sleep in the living room while his or her bed is upended to clean the bedroom carpet...the inconvenience will be worth it compared to the smell forever.

I hate rushed moves with no money left...btdt.

For enzymatic, they used to make dissolvable tablets that were cheaper than buying ready-made spray. Found them at the pet store.

I have a kitty, and she isn't spayed. :-( she has left her scent on my leather sofa between the cushions. I have sprayed them with something called fizzion. I bought it from amazon. Buy the tablets you dissolve in water.

This place was like that when we moved in. We had the carpets cleaned and paid extra for a special pet odor remover. It didn't work. We ended up ripping up all the carpet and pad and dh went in in a suit with a mask and sprayed the whole house down with bleach. It worked pretty well. Then we painted and that pretty much took care of it. We have very sensitive noses, though, and an allergic daughter, so we were extra careful. I'm sorry . Did you buy or rent the house? If you're renting the landlord should absolutely take care of it! We had to dip into our emergency fund to replace the carpet, though I hated to do it just new to home ownership, but there wasn't anything else we could do.

If the cat pee is that bad, there is no way to get it out. Carpets must be replaced, it's probably in the padding too. Yuck! So sorry for you.
