Re: Rental House- Yard Questions
If the lot is 1/2 an acre that's considered to big for an electric mower or reel mower. You'll want a gas push mower. Whether you get self-propelled or not is up to you. I like extra workout of pushing.

Only like half of it is grass. The rest is trees.

Re: Rental House- Yard Questions
Personally I'd just get a snow shovel.
Maybe ask the owner about mud? Really depends how well it drains, etc etc. We end up putting straw down on parts of our driveway sometimes, but other parts don't get muddy at all.

Re: Rental House- Yard Questions
Look at craigslist and garage sales for a mower. We have owned our fair share of lawn mowers, including push, self propelled, and riding mowers, and have never purchased one new. People are trading up all the time, and you can get some great deals on used mowers.
As for the driveway, honestly, unless it's huge, I'd just shovel. Especially since you aren't sure you'll be there long term. A snow blower is nice, but not necessary.

Re: Rental House- Yard Questions
Yes, 2-stage snowblowers are expensive. If you're mechanically inclined you can get a used one (spark plugs, belts, etc need replacing) but a low-rated one isn't worth the money.
