Default Potato / Sweet Potato

I know they are really very different.
I know that sweet potatoes are much much healthier
When I slow cook them both they taste the same to me.

So..... I have great potato soup recipe that we really like, but that I know is not really 'good' for us. It is a slow cook recipe - 8 hours of cooking time.

What I'm wondering is if I use sweet potatoes, will it taste the same or about the same like when I put them together in a slow cook roast? I'm willing to experiment and find out the hard way, but thought someone here might have an idea. Also, should I extend the cooking time since sweet potatoes start off so much firmer?

I am just astounded at how they can taste the same! I have done both in a crockpot (though admittedly not the same way) and I can't fathom how they would taste the same.

To me, they taste very different. So the soup would taste very different to me too, I imagine. But if you don't mind it, go for it!

I think they are vastly different. My DH eats potatoes but not sweet potato. I've not heard of anyone thinking they taste similarly before.

I wonder if slow cooking them with meat and with olive oil means I'm tasting those flavors and seeing them as the same

Ok, dh says he thinks they taste different. I think I'm going to give this a try and see what happens.

There are two types of sweet potato: orange flesh ones which are super sweet and white flesh ones which are a bit more potato like. If you use the latter you might get away with the soup recipe tasting similar

I would think it would taste different--but it might still be quite good! Worth a try, I think. (But then, I like pumpkin soup so I don't think I'd mind the slightly sweeter taste.)

Experiment is underway.

Lesson 1 - cutting raw sweet potatoes hurts your hands - they are HARD. I knew that but forgot.

I use sweet potatoes with roast and we like them. I would think the soup would taste different, but still would be very good. I don't think they need any longer time in a slow cooker.

Ok, the results are in! Yeah, tasted very different.

Dh - Some cinnamon and this would be a great dessert!
Dd1 - A bit too sweet
Dd2 - I can have another bowl, right!!
Me - If I was served this, I would definitely finish it, but I'm not sure I want to make it again.

Ds - never tasted it, but I know I don't like it.

I wish I could send you some! That is lesson ...whatever I'm on... five sweet potatoes and five regular potatoes do not equate.

Speaking of left overs, I don't want to waste this - do you think it would freeze alright? It's the potatoes, chicken broth, eval milk, a touch of flour and sour cream.

Should freeze fine. If the sour cream comes up a bit curdled after re-heating, try blending it

Not necessarily. They both have benefits. (Unless you're sensitive to nightshades which changes everything.) Regular potatoes have about twice the protein and potassium as a sweet potato, for example. Sweet potatoes have beta carotene and are also very good for elasticity of the body. Sweet potatoes also have about 4 times the amount of sugar as a white potato. Both have B-6 but white potatoes have more magnesium.

If you use the sweet potatoes with a yellow flesh it would turn out the same, I think. I would use the same cooking time. If you use a sweet potato with an orange flesh, like garnet sweet potatoes, it will taste very different but will probably still be quite good. I'd definitely try it but I would also feel really good about making it with regular white potatoes.
