Do you mean clean dishes drying in the sink?
I have a dishwasher and a drying rack beside my sink, so the only things that sit in my sink are pots and pans, wooden or wooden-handled utensils, maybe a dish cloth...I just don't like for anyone to come in and wash their hands into my dish sink. Oh, the kitchen sink in my little 1949 house is right by the door we all come in.

We're having a single bowl put in next week. I use a dish pan. We have a bathroom near kitchen. We have a laundry room sink near kitchen.

I've only had a double.

Double. It feels way more sanitary to me.

Default Re: Kitchen sink: single or double basin

I love my current set-up. I have a double sink and wash on one side, and permanently keep a strainer in the other side. The sink is deep enough that when the strainer is empty you don't see it. I considered a farm-style sink but with a corner sink the front would be too wide and need a really big corner cabinet. The sink is under-mounted and the spray nozzle is built into the faucet so there is little visual clutter (important to me). I have a small prep sink in the kitchen island that comes in handy when the double has soapy water on one side and I need to drain or rinse something. If I need to thaw a turkey, I use my laundry room sink. Deep but not huge basins were important to me. If I ever buy new sinks I will make sure to get a better metal gauge because I've made a couple of dents in the past two years, and our previous sink I had only made one dent in 15 years. My current sink is insulated which helps to keep water warm. I had no idea when I chose it, though. I accepted the sinks that were included for no charge with the counter top purchase. I had no idea about features to consider besides aesthetics and not wanting sharp corners, a flat bottom, or white ceramic.

I've always had a standard double before this house we are in. This one has a huge single basin - much more countertop space than a standard double basin, though not any deeper than a standard sink. The faucet is wall mounted, so it feels deeper than it is, which is awesome. I LOVE this sink. We do not have a dishwasher.

We use a plastic dishpan that we set in the sink to hold soapy water when washing (or dirty dishes waiting to be washed) and have a dish rack on the counter next to the sink. This way, it functions the same as a double basin, but we have flexibility.

Default Re: Kitchen sink: single or double basin

I have a large, deep sink and a plastic basin, which I use for rinsing. (I can then throw the water on the plants.) I would not want a double sink, not enough room for large items. My dil has a double sink and I find it very annoying.

I **HATE** deep sinks. Every time I've washed dishes in a deep sink, it hurts my back. Not sure if this is b/c I'm taller than average or what (I'm not that tall--5'8"--but that's above average for women I guess), but it's enough to make me never ever want one.

The single bowl I bought didn't fit due to old, 17 year old sink being a funny shape on edge. Can't afford new counters at this time.

Plumber found one with right dimensions. It's a shallow double. I want to cry. It's already installed.

He sent picture. Hope I like better in person.

I would guess it is because you are tall. I am only 5' and find working in a deep sink often a better height than the countertops

You must hand wash more than I do. I'm 5'8" as well. Have never noticed. But I use my dishwasher for everything I can. And try to leave the hand wash dishes for hubby.

I'm 5' 10" and I love deep sinks. I think I have long arms, though. I also keep my lats engaged when I need to reach.

I hate when my husband washes his dirty, garage/outside work dirtied hands in my kitchen sink. We have an outside sink for that! Not to mention 5 other bathroom sinks to use. WHY does it have to be my kitchen sink.

I'm sorry. Do you have plans to replace the counters at some point? Then you can get whatever you want in an undermount.

I don't like my sink, either, but I'm waiting until we can redo the counters. Which will be when we redo the cabinets and pull out the wall oven and the cooktop and replace it with a double oven propane range. So, in like 300 years?

Ack, yes that would bother me! I don't at all mind people handwashing normal indoor hands over dishes...like while cooking, before eating, after cleaning the kitchen (with food safe cleaners like dishsoap, vinegar, baking soda), because that's no worse than the food on the plates to begin with, but I draw the line at chemicals or grit. Kids coming in from playing in a sandbox, for example...just no.
