Default Best beach toys

I wasn't sure where to put this, mods you can move if there's somewhere better.

We are going to the beach for a week and I was just wondering what toys Your kids have used the most. I have a 7 yo, a 5 yo and a 1 yo. I'm gonna get some new buckets and shovels. They love water toys also, I'm just not sure what will work best on the beach. I don't want to buy one of those big baskets or buckets full of cheap plastic toys that might not get used.

I'd love to hear any and all ideas ty!

Definitely buckets and shovels. If you have room, a long-handled shovel and a big bucket (3-5 gallons) are great! Something for sifting sand is nice, too. Other than that we don't use a whole lot.

My kids loved having a real shovel, like a metal mini gardening shovel. They also had a lot of fun with sturdy nets to catch and release little crabs and even fish.

We spend most of our weekends at the beach in the summer. Buckets and shovels are by FAR the most-used toys. Our favorite shovels are these claw-like things we got at Ikea. Next on the list is a net. I have a plastic beach bag with ventilation holes and a shoulder strap to stash it all in.

My older girls also like to have their own blankets and beach chairs. If they can carry it, they can take it. Those woven bamboo mats are nice and easy to carry but usually don't last more than a season, two at the most.

My 3 kids are tween/teens and still like taking a couple shovels and buckets for sand castles. We have found that a couple of good sturdy buckets, one small and one bigger, and a couple of small garden spades are enough. We have had better luck with good cheap but sturdy spades from the gardening section. They seem to up better than the ones that come with the buckets in the toy section.
When our kids were little we would often throw in things like the top from a liquid laundry detergent container or a plastic butter tub just to add a little something extra. It's free and can be recycled or trashed if it breaks or the kids just don't end up using it and you're not out any $. We learned the hard way not to take too much though. We found ourselves chasing sand toys all over the beach.

For any kind of outdoor stuff with my DD, I bring a ziplock for her treasures that she discovers. That way she knows ahead of time how much space she has for saving things and I don't have to find a place for gross stuff.

A little off topic, but do you know the trick of using baby powder to get sand off and keep it from sticking when you are ready to get back in the car? Sand castle molds can be fun too.

Thanks! We've been to the beach a bunch but usually just for a few hours at a time and they didn't play with toys much, or if they did, just a bucket and shovel. This time we are going for a week and we'll be at the beach most of the day. I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something

I do know about the baby powder and it's a great trick! We have a baby this summer so I wanna try the Pinterest idea I e seen floating around about digging a shallow hole, lining it with a shower curtain and filling it with water to give baby a place to splash. Has anyone tried it?

Default Best beach toys

My kids really liked just regular toys they could play imagination with like plastic animals, mermaid Barbie, stuff like that. Along with buckets and shovels.

Seconding (thirding?) buckets and shovels and little metal shovels. We also like kites and something to play team games with - a football, soccer ball or Frisbee.

Make sure you have enough little shovels for everyone! This is critical for a good beach experience!

Default Re: Best beach toys

Are you driving or flying (as in...how much room do you have?)

We bring a larger metal shovel (It's a foldable military shovel) that only an adult is allowed to use, and we dig a huge hole (basically a kiddie pool.)

Our holes are so large when DH is done, that basically we end up with a kiddie pool. We end up with all of the nearby kids in the hole! It never fails! (Once, we had some kids try to kick our kids out of the hole, claiming ownership! That did not go well for those kids!)

I've never heard (or seen) anyone use a plastic liner, and that could be nice, especially if the tide is going out and you can't get water into the hole. BUT, it would also prevent the fun part of squishing in the watery sand and all of the fun of trying to dig the hole deeper and put more sand up on the walls, etc. So that could go either way. If the tide is coming in, then dig your hole up far enough on the beach that the kids get some good play time before the tide covers the hole!

Also, kids love "work" to do at the beach. If water doesn't stay in that hole, then the kids *love* to run back and forth with the buckets to try to keep water in the hole!! (If that is the case, a smaller hole is better.) They also love to keep putting sand up on the walls of the hole once the tide is coming in to try to protect the fortress!

We also bring little metal shovels and plastic buckets. The plastic shovels are often too flimsy to actually be useful.

A sieve of some sort, and also a net on a stick is fun. Trying to catch minnows with that will entertain DH all day long!

A ball that bounces on the water is fun, and we do boogie boards starting at about age 5. At that age, I set them up in the tiny waves and drag them a bit with the leash. But it's so fun! (for them!)

Also bring vinegar/water in a spray bottle for any stings. That lives in our beach toy bag.

Ikea bags make excellent beach bags!

If any of your kids have/are into toy dump trucks or excavators, ds has loved using those at the beach.
Otherwise I'm just gonna pile on the shovel and pail train.
We do like beach balls too.
