Re: Decluttering thread!
My laundry room is an eyesore! My goal for the next bit is to purge the useless stuff that accumulates on top of my washer/dryer.

Does chopping my hair count as decluttering?

Re: Decluttering thread!
So, I realized that there are some things that I hang on to because I think that they could be useful - and they could be - if we used them. So, that leads to me keeping stuff for a long time because some day, we might use it. I just threw away some old folders from my kids school supplies that had belonged to my 21 year old daughter from high school. I still have some of her and my other kids' old spirals. I just offered a dozen partly used spiral notebooks free on facebook and freecycle because the paper is useful. Probably no one will want them. I am just going to throw them away. It feels wasteful, but we have a lot of brand new unused spirals and we have at least a half dozen partly used ones all over the house that we are using and we will never use them all. So, it is clutter. Yes. I should just throw them away. Right? I threw away my kids old icky binders from last school year this week.

Re: Decluttering thread!
School/office supplies are my downfall too. I have a hard time throwing something like that away, but donating it would feel easier for me. I bet a secondhand store would sell a partially empty spiral notebook for much cheaper than a full one, and might be exactly what someone needs?

Re: Decluttering thread!
Actually, someone has already replied on facebook who says she wants the spirals - hopefully she will get them from me. I did throw away some old folders and I sharpened a bunch of short pencils and put them in a pencil bag to take with me when I substitute teach because - every. single. day. when I sub - one or usually more - kids ask me for a pencil. Like for one thing - they are at school and should have supplies and yes - these kids can afford them for the most part - that is not the issue. The issue is they don't keep up with their stuff - we pick pens and pencils up off the floors in the halls and classrooms daily and they break pencils -find those daily as well and some of them just don't seem to care. It rather annoys me. But, since I have a bunch of old pencils, I will bring them and give them out until I run out.

Re: Decluttering thread!
I threw away a bunch of old crayons the other day. I picked out some and put them in a quart sized ziploc bag. The rest I tossed. Yes, they could have been saved for some sort of art project, but honestly, that's never going to happen.

I've come to a halt. We had sickness here for awhile and it threw me out of my groove.

Re: Decluttering thread!
Ever since I started working at the beginning of the summer, our project room has been out of control. Just ridiculous. The kids have gotten out just about everything and left it EVERYWHERE. I've been sickened by the thought of trying to re-organize it.
So, I decided to reduce my stress and throw out most of it. It's not fair to expect them to organize more than they can handle. It's not fair for me to have to clean up after other people all the time. So, I'm throwing out just about everything except books we actually use, paper, markers, crayons, pencils, yarn that is actually useful, and my sewing supplies (which I will make off limits for awhile). I'm setting a timer for 10 minutes a day where I will go in there and fill up garbage bags. Feels so good! ---------- Post added at 11:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 PM ---------- Yes, that is what I have been telling myself. We cannot do art projects in a disaster area so I'd rather having nothing but simple, basic supplies and a place to actually use them/put them away. Once the kids show me they can manage that, I will consider adding a few other things. |

Re: Decluttering thread!
Well, someone took the spirals and someone is supposed to come and pick up some old greeting cards that I listed online for free. I need to clean out more stuff now.

Re: Decluttering thread!
I took two boxes, two lap trays and an area rug to Goodwill today.
The flip side is I also just receieved some items from my grandparents that have not been assigned a home yet. Oh, but I did return our brooder supplies to my parents for the winter. That cleaned up a corner. I need to tackle the landing zone by the coat closet but but but it intimidates me. |

Re: Decluttering thread!
I hung 3M Command hooks inside the closet and hung a nice coat hook rack in our front hall, plus another one at the back hall. I made them low enough so the kids can hang their things without help. We also have multiple boot trays in our front hall. Dh is going to make a low shelving unit so that we can get 2-3 boot trays in the space of one so our winter shoes and boots can be stacked somewhat.

Re: Decluttering thread!
I haven't quit. Life just threw me off the wagon for a bit, but I'm back on.
Got my laundry room kind of sorted out and I'm almost caught up on a huge back load of laundry. Threw out a few old tee shirts and a big stack of papers this week. Filled a bag of my clothes to donate, and went through the girl's play clothes drawers and made a big stack to donate. I also did 2/3 of my upstairs pantry areas. |
