Default Seasoning cast iron pans

I've just had my 3 old dry pans sandblasted to clean them up from rust etc.
Now I need to know how to season them and care for them properly.

So tell me the basics please?

If you do a search, you'll find a few threads on this already. You won't get many responses *now* because of your time zone. But if you want to get started, the answers are here for the taking!

Eat nothing but bacon for a month then your pans will be well seasons for lard.
Just kidding, we'll sort of.
If you save your bacon grease for flavoring other meals use it on your cast iron. If you don't have any then get some tallow or lard. My favorite way to season is to completely slather the pan in lard and pop it in an oven for a few hours. This works with every thing but cast iron tea kettles. I have yet to figure out how to season those and have gone through three in thirty years. I used lard once but then my water was a wee bit greasy for a couple of months.

The key is to cook at a lower temperature than you're probably used to, and scrape/stir with a flat metal spatula a lot during cooking. That will prevent most sticking.

Mine are usually very non stick. I season on the stove top (I've described the process a lot so you can probably find it on a search) I can fry eggs and potatoes etc with no sticking. IMO the important thing is the seasoning I do right before I cook which is to heat the pan, spread a very small amount of oil and then heat for 30 seconds to 1 minute before adding food.

I do this too. I set my kitchen timer for 3 minutes to let the pan heat up. Then I add oil (butter) and cook. No egg sticking.

I use coconut oil when cooking in my cast iron.

That said, I don't do any specific seasoning. Just heat oil before adding whatever I'm cooking. But my pans are used multiple times a day so very well seasoned.

Use, use, and keep using. It seems that the people who have the most problems with cast iron sticking are those that use cast iron only occassionally.
