Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
I would love advice and ideas. DH and I aren't quiet seeing eye to eye.
Background: We need some sort of couch. Reasons: I want a comfy couch. DH wants a futon. I refuse to get a used couch from a home I don't know- We want to buy a house next summer, so I want to get something that'll go with us (even as like a "guest room" or "office" couch and not our main couch. DH doesn't seem ready to make that financial investment. He doesn't want to spend more than $300... Advice? Other options we aren't thinking of? We've been in our apartment for almost a month and still are no closer to resolving this.

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
I loved my futon when I had one.
Are there secondhand furniture shops where you can know they won't be filled with cooties? (That's what we do for sofas). |

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
Sleeper sofa? Ikea has some under $300. I've seen them at Sears Outlet, too.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/ca...ng_room/10663/ Our first "couch" was a futon and it transitioned into our spare bedroom "library" when we moved into a larger house. The futon fit our needs very well. We bought a used wooden frame (from my roommate) for cheap and ponied up for a really good mattress. The cheap futon mattresses are garbage, IMO.

Nice couch. Make an investment in something that will last a long time. Better to pay a little more and get something good than to keep buying cheap stuff.

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
I was going to say Ikea as well. They are a great mid point, not too expensive but last much much better than Walmart. We have had our Ikea couch for 9 years and for the past 4 it ha been rather roughly used by children jumping on it, it still looks good and is functional.
---------- Post added at 08:21 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:17 AM ---------- http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/spr/89129207/ I moved the children from jumping to take the picture. I can straighten it so that it still looks nice.

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
Since you are buying a home next year, I would hold off on buying a couch because the size you get or style you get may not work with the new space and decor you go with. In an office, a futon would fit in just fine; actually, we just purchased a futon for our office/homeschool space. I would suggest the 8" mattress if it will be used for sleeping more than once in a while. The less money you spend now will be more money in your bank account for the home purchase.

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
We hd a futon nd no one ever sat on it because it was too uncomfortable and when we used for a guest bed it was uncomfortable so had to really pad it.maybe some are more comfy than others. We have a Roooms to Go outlet store here.Anything like that there? People tend to ask lots for used couches on CL in our area

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
We have the IKEA beddinge. http://www.ikea.com/aa/en/catalog/products/S19089417/
That might be a compromise for you both. It's not exactly a couch but as a sofa bed it's a bit like a futon. It's big and generous enough for 3 adults or 4 or 5 kids. So I think you would find it versatile in the future as a spare bed or whatever. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
Ikea just isn't what you would call comfy though, if you compare sitting on it with sitting on other sofas.

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
Definitely check out Ikea. It's not top of the line, but most of their sofas are decent quality with a good price tag. I have the ektorp and it was only $399. It's covered in fully removable covers, so if we ever move and want to add more furniture, we could buy the same line and new matching covers. Plus, with kids, easy to pull off and wash the covers! I find it just as comfortable as the $800 sofa we have in our family room.

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
Well, the biggest factor here is obviously the finances. When you say dh doesn't want to spend more is it because you don't have more or that your budget won't accommodate more? Or is it that you have the money and could comfortably spend it, but dh doesn't want to?
Because my answer is very different based on that.

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
Buy the couch *you* want.
...................... I LOVE the couch we bought in Virginia at a furniture store that was going out of business. I paid $300 or less. Both ends recline (but not the middle). I LOVE it. We've had it over a decade. It's a GREAT couch. Whatever house you buy, there will be space for a normal couch. Sectionals may not work. .......... My mom just bought a barely used couch from a very upscale neighborhood. I wouldn't rule that out, personally. ............... And I will *pray* for the right couch for your family.

Thank you all for the Ikea links, pictures, and ideas! I've never bought from them before- the store here in VA looks (from its website) like it is under construction right now? Can I order online? Will I have to put it together once it gets here? I haven't looked into second hand furniture stores, but I passed one today on my way back from acupuncture. I might venture back out there today when DH leaves for work ---------- Post added at 01:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:41 PM ---------- Quote:
And thank you! Your couch sounds amazing; I'd love one that reclined!!! ---------- Post added at 01:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:42 PM ---------- Quote:
My concern is that we're going to spend $300 on a futon that will be so uncomfortable I won't be able to use it when we could've spent more on something that's actually comfortable, will last, and can be repurposed when we move next summer. But I get where DH is coming from, too...

Re: Couch or Futon or keep sitting on floor?
We have a lot of Ikea furniture, it is great for guest rooms and transitional rooms. I highly recommend thejir couches, they're quite comfortable.
