I actually just got one of those greenhouses. I plan to start using it as soon as I start my seeds. Probably in about 3 weeks but it depends on the plant. I am using this site to figure out when to start things... http://plantingbycolor.com/

Re: 2014 Garden Plans
Those small plasic greenhouses...
A few years ago, I bought two of the four-shelf models with the plastic covers (they were on end-of-season sale). Biggest negative: lack of ventilation. You need to vent greenhouse-type structures at the top and the zippers on the cover start at the bottom. Open, the covers become perfect targets for wind, filling up like a parafoil and knocking the whole unit over, plants and all. I still use mine, but not as 'greenhouses' outside. I use them now (sans covers) for curing onions and such and I reduced one to two levels (about waist height) and put a big tray on top to use as a potting bench. Lights... The easiest thing to do is buy shop lights, the kind that hang from chains. Screw a hook to the underside of a table (or rig up some other solution) and hang the chains. Voila, adjustable grow lights. My 4' lights are mounted on wire shelving units. If you don't have any table space at all, you can install cheap track shelving on a wall and mount a fixture to the underside of a shelf (use wood blocks to help clear the brackets, if needed). Make sure there are enough brackets to support the weight of plants, soil and lights. I have a 2' light upstairs for cuttings that I need to mist regularly throughout the day. If I put them downstairs under my main lights, I forget about them. ---------- Post added at 08:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:16 PM ---------- Happygrl... There are a tonne of past threads answering all sorts of newbie questions, too. Don't forget to search those out as well as asking your own questions. |
