What easy-to-use medicinal plants can I grow?
Im thinking Canlendula, cus I use calendula salve for everything. And lavender. What varieties of these two plants should I get and where do I order the seeds? What other medicial or useful flowers or herbs should I grow in addition to my fruits, veggies and kitchen herbs?

I agree with the aloe. It was the very first thing that came to mind. Plus SUPER easy to use when needed.
I need to get another aloe plant. The kids knocked over our most recent aloe plant and broke the pot. The plant never recovered from that disaster.

Re: What easy-to-use medicinal plants can I grow?
Aloe was my first thought, too. They are super forgiving if you forget to water them, too.
Lavender usually takes a couple of years before it will flower. I've grown it in my garden, but I've had to buy plants. I've not had success growing it from seed. Hot peppers can be used to make muscle rub. (Soak them in alcohol for a few weeks and it extracts the capsaicin. Strain that and you can use it as is or add it to lotions.) Super easy to grow, but don't put them next to your tomatoes, or the tomatoes will be spicy. (Ask me how I know that! ) Echinacea is easy to grow, but you need time to process it. I grew stevia once a long time ago, too.

Re: What easy-to-use medicinal plants can I grow?
Indoors or out?
If you get aloe, try not to get the whorled kind. The leaves are huge and it doesn't self-propagate. I'm blanking on the correct term for the kind with smaller leaves that does self-propagate but it's not whorled. If you ask on Facebook for aloe starts that would be the right kind. I'd start by finding out what medicinal plants are native to your region and start with those. They'll grow easily and spread. I harvest red raspberry leaves for tea. We have loads of wild St Johns Wort which makes a great drawing salve. |

Re: What easy-to-use medicinal plants can I grow?
Great idea here. I never think of growing allure because I grew up in Tucson where enormous, useful aloe pants grew afloat like weeds and I tend to think of then "left behind things from home" now that I cannot grow them outdoors. I forget I can grow little ones inside.
I love the idea of the pepper rub!! I use a capsin based rub often!! Echinacea, Yes! I have wild black raspberries in my yard, is that good for anything besides eating the berries? I am seeing lavender is notoriously hard to grow. I'll look into local stuff too, that's a great suggestion. |

Re: What easy-to-use medicinal plants can I grow?
Lavender is really easy to grow if you have the right climate. Wet spring, dry summer. I have a patch that I completely ignore and it grows really well. You have to buy the right kind, though. Spanish lavender wouldn't survive my winters.
If you don't have drier summers, you can still grow lavender if you amend the soil to be very well drained. And it needs a lot of sun. I don't know if black raspberry leaf tea has beneficial properties but it's worth a Google. I also have a type of oregano that is perennial in my zone (5). I can't remember what it's called, though. Catnip grows everywhere I've lived and catnip tea is supposed to be great for your skin. A few leaves steeped with regular iced tea is delicious. Alfalfa tea is very nutritious but I haven't tried growing it. |
