Re: What do you say? How do you explain it? We should have a script!
It might have been a mistake but I've enjoyed this thread so thanks

Re: What do you say? How do you explain it? We should have a script!
Me, too.
We were involved a study on preschoolers eating, exercise and weight. There was a whole section in one of the surveys asking all these questions about when we punish our kids - either trying to figure out how consistent we are in our discipline or else how strict and punitive we are about our kids' eating. Since I didn't know what they were trying to find out, I didn't know how to answer - should I respond as if the word 'punishment' meant 'discipline', or should I just put 'never' for all the answers? So I crossed it out and wrote "We use a positive, non-punitive discipline style." and wrote the link to GOYB Parenting website.

Re: What do you say? How do you explain it? We should have a script!
I pretty much avoid it... but I'm finding as my kids get older, it really comes up less.
Also, as they get older it really becomes easier to follow along with 2 Timothy 3:16, so I'm really trying to figure out a way to say what we do in line with that "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness..." I do use Bible verses they've learned and relate it to what they are doing, and ask them honestly what they think. Like not in a forced, give me the Sunday School answer way, but an honest, "let's think about this" way. Especially with the older two since they've professed Christ. That's another thing I'm working on... somehow connecting their salvation with the fact that I'm just there to guide them now (because you have the people who think that parents are responsible for their children's salvation...) and God/Holy Spirit are there to convict them. They no longer need punishments. I haven't figured all that out though... and I do still mess up from time to time, especially with my oldest. |

I've had flustered moments and just said 'oh, I can't think straight right now, here is the web site address for GCM......'
