Default Dental health using herbal and/or non-conventional methods

I'd really love to hear from those of you who use herbal and/or non-conventional methods. I'll post our story below; we are just beginning our dental health journey using herbs, etc. to heal some dental issues.

We just moved to a new area and just visited a pediatric dentist for a check up for all three boys (ages 9, 7 and almost 5). we just returned from our visit. The good news is that my oldest (the sensitive one) said that it was the least terrible dentist visit he's had. Yeah, for small miracles. The other good news is that he has no cavities. The neutral news is that he has three adult teeth trying to come in but the baby teeth are being stubborn so he needs to start wiggling them to encourage them to let go already. Unfortunately, a few years ago (when he was 6 or 7) three of his very back molars started crumbling. I was blind-sided. We drank raw milk, ate grass-fed beef, took cod liver oil, use Real salt, drank reverse osmosis water (which I'm not so sure is all that great for our bodies now), no fluoride, no juice, no pop, etc. etc. I couldn't believe that this could happen. The dentist assured me that it wasn't my fault. He said that he could have had a virus or something that interrupted the formation of his teeth while still in the gums. Anyway, the procedure to "fix" his crumbling teeth was HORRIBLE for him. And now the "fix" is failing. So, the new dentist said that he will need stainless steel crowns for two of them. And even worse is that one of the teeth has decay that is affecting the nerve* and she is referring him to a specialist to evaluate the tooth to a better degree than she could. The other two boys have tiny cavities but I am confident that we can heal those via better nutrition and some supplements. I am going to start collecting info on healing cavities naturally with some of the blog posts that I have read recently on the topic. However, I have come across bits here and there about foods and supplements that I haven't seen written about in blog posts such as using elecampane tincture for dental health. I was given a bottle of it and the slip of paper said that it was good for dental health (lessens tooth decay, firms up gums, etc.)(AND . So, I've also read Curing Tooth Decay by Ramiel Nagel. It's been a while. And a lot of the blog posts echo what he wrote in his book: bone broth, organ meats, raw milk, mineral-rich salt such as Real salt, high vitamin butter oil, give up grains (or at least soak them in an acidic medium), give up sugar, etc. (And, the last two seem impossible for me to implement so I'm just skipping those) *about that tooth with decay near the nerve. "Coincidentally", a week before the dentist appt. I started giving him tincture of elecampane root and the pain stopped. However, it had only been a week of using the tincture so I'm curious if it has been healing but hasn't been given enough time to totally heal and still showed up on the x-ray. And when the asked him about experiencing pain, he spoke truthfully but didn't mention that the pain stopped when we started the tincture. Oy! So my question for you is this: what have you read and/or do to keep your family's teeth strong? TIA. I will post in the comments what I have found so far, too. But right now, my youngest is needing me.

Subbing... ds2 has decay, and we've been doing some of the things you mentioned, but I've been lax and the dentist wants to fill I've started adding activated charcoal and DE to his toothpaste, and using iodine and colloidal silver on the teeth w/ the cavities. I have no idea if it will help or not, though.

we have a referral from the dentist to go see an endodontist. yes they are his permanent molars. we will go see the endodontist to get a better diagnosis. but I am going to resist or put off doing a root canal that was suggested as a possibility. we are going to do herbal and natural healing remedies for a few months to see if that will improve the situation then get a fresh evaluation with x-rays. We will get second and third opinions and also see some holistic dentists before we do anything permanent like a root canal. I am very hopeful that the herbal remedies will work and in fact I am so thankful that the pain went away after using the elecampane root tincture after just a few days. we are also paying more attention to our dietary intake and doing a better job of brushing and flossing and rinsing after eating.

I had a similar experience with one of my molars crumbling or breaking apart around a filling that I had put in when I was a teenager and had to get a crown a few years ago. I am thankful that I have connected with a lot of natural mamas in this new area and have gotten referrals for holistic dentists.

Oh good - yes would absolutely not do a root canal or even consider one until they examine roots of these teeth.I went thru so much expense and pain having root canals done but problem was a crack in roots in which case root canals would only make worse or just be futile.

So, here is a list of things that should be do-able for our family:
*oil pulling with coconut oil
*Barlean's flaxseed supplement with borage oil and other good things
*Blue Ice Royal Butter Oil / Fermented Cod Liver Oil Blend in capsules
*going to make some toothpaste with coconut oil and bentonite clay.
*elecampane root tincture in their one daily glass of V8 Fusion juice
*rinsing with echinacea tea that has xylitol added (echinacea tea is antibacterial and xylitol helps retard the "bad" bacteria in the mouth from forming)
*brushing more carefully and being far more diligent than we were about flossing
* I found a treasure trove of non-conventional dental health options at http://www.healingteethnaturally.com/ --- enough info to fill a book!
*We started ingesting some "clay water" (water with some bentonite clay in it) which I also added to their daily glass of juice HOWEVER I found out from an acquaintance that their are some concerns about lead. She wrote: "http://www.fda.gov/.../PressAnnouncements/ucm229320.htm

http://www.food.gov.uk/news.../news/...6/clay-warning

The FDA has recently started investigating any company they could find selling benzonite clay. The testing by the FDA revealed high amounts of lead, iron, etc. The companies were left with two choices...1) remove all suggestions and directions for internal consumption and not market their product as such (this is what Pascalite did) or 2) keep the internal consumption directions, but add a warning label. They vary, but will say things like (this product known to cause cancer and birth defects in the state of California) or (this product contains chemicals known to cause harm), etc.
Hope this helps." Now, I'm no fan of the FDA but I am a little concerned about ingesting lead so I think that we are going to stop ingesting it. We are doing so many other great options that I don't think that we need to.

And the thought occurred to me today that Halloween with all of the candy was just 3 weeks ago and I wonder if those tiny cavities are from the overindulgence of the sugar for far too many days after Halloween. Hmmmmm.

Hello, found you in the other healing teeth thread. Here's our story:
When dd was 4 1/2 we went to the dentist because she had some brown spots on her teeth (never hurt) Apparently she had quite a few cavities. We were recommended to a kids dentist who looked in her mouth and wants to do $3000 of dental work and leave her mouth full of fillings and caps. I DO NOT like this idea so I went online looking for other options and came across Weston A Price and Ramiel Nagel. I decided we would try the natural route.
2 1/2 years later our whole family is grain free due to sensitivities discovered when we started minimizing grain (dh's family has a history of celiac disease, he had been tested but had gotten what we now believe was a false negative but that is a whole different story). We also take FCLO daily, water kefir (no juices), and I recently started making calcium bentonite clay/xylitol toothpaste which the kids will actually use. The kids also consume raw dairy. I was really strict in the sugar for a while but I've relaxed on that somewhat although I still try to minimize it my priority has been to make sure it is a grain free source as I think the sensitivity to grain was the triggering factor as far as our family was concerned. We did have a grass finished beef source as well but it is a 3 hr drive 1 way and I have found nothing near where we are currently living
DD has started loosing the baby teeth that are still spotted and I'm hoping that her new teeth will have stronger enamel. She has never had pain from the cavities and so far the other kids teeth look clear. I have to also say that Dh and I were using a tooth powder and my teeth were getting worse and worse looking sorta clear and grey and gum pain but when we switched to the calcium bentonite toothpaste it made a real difference. They whitened and brightened up within a week and the gum pain has been less.
I have to say that grain free it is really difficult to find the supplements I'd like to have the kids on but I'm slowly getting there.
Oh and we are currently just on the FCLO without high fat butter b/c ds3 can't do dairy at all yet but we were doing that for a while.

I only skimmed so I don't know if hydrogen peroxide was mentioned. I rinse with food-grade hydrogen peroxide every day. It really helps with gum health. (You have to dilute it according to the package directions.)

Eco-Dent tooth powder
A multi-mineral supplement. I take T-Tapp alfalfa for minerals and Trace Minerals.

We went to a dentist who did ozone treatments to treat the decay, and that worked well for Monkey. But, she was under 2 at the time we did it, and at one point, she refused to let the dentist continue. So he took the ozone gas into a syringe, injected that into a small glass of water, and painted that "ozone water" on her teeth.

So that gave me the great idea to do that at home. I bought a water ozonator. Once a day, I would ozonate a small cup of water. After that was done, I added in a good amount of xylitol. We called it "sweet water" and we used that to brush her teeth before bed. (Previously, we had been using the "sweet water" with regular water, not ozonated water. It tastes the same.) The evidence is only anecdotal, but I feel that this worked beautifully for her. She had some pretty severe decay going on. We did this every day for about a year or so, and then I got lazy about it because her teeth were doing so great. She did get more decay about a year after we stopped doing this.

Monkey is now nearly 7, and her new dentist wants us to start doing this again. Her new dentist also really pushes water irrigation "after every meal." (We eat about 6 times a day, so that's not going to happen over here!)
