Default out of season clothing

So, we are preparing to move! This is great, we will own our home, but we are stepping up to another bedroom, but losing some storage space that we presently have. I will need to be much more intentional and planning about closet storage space.

Presently, I store our out of season/saving till someone grows into it clothing in big plastic bins that are in our closets. In our new home we will not have this sort of space in bedroom closets. It seems to me that the most reasonable place to store these things would be in garage shelving OR in a storage shelter outside/detached from the house.

We are in central tx. I don't think that the detached shelter is the right place. But in the garage--what do you think? Is there a way to bag the clothing in storage bins so it stays nice?

Storing clothing in plastic bins has worked well for us. I typically re-wash everything at the beginning of the new season, then it's ready to go! I try to make sure things are well labeled, and try to remember what I have so I don't over-buy things that I already have.

It would be fine except for clothing with elastic. The heat would degrade that really fast and it would need replacing.

Do you utilize under-bed storage? We have flatter plastic boxes to hold things under our beds because our old house had only two small closets.

would you worry about insects/moths/scorpions? or dampness? I was wondering if I might need to put them into something airtight.

Underbed storage is a good idea, hadn't thought of that!

They are plastic boxes with sealing lids - nothing can get into them easily. We've never had a bug or dampness get into them . They carry warning labels about suffocation risk to children in fact.

This is my garage:

Shelving from Home Depot, boxes from Costco. Labels in 100 pt font on Microsoft Word. I have pretty much a complete wardrobe from newborn to a few years ahead of my biggest kid in both genders, plus cloth diapers, newborn linens, snowpants and boots, shoes of all types in sizes toddler 5 to size 4 youth, etc, in these boxes. So you wouldn't need nearly this much storage space for out-of-season clothing.

we have always stored all of our out of season clothing away. We've never had the closet space to do it any other way.

We always package it up in rubbermaid bins with lids. At our previous house we stored them stacked in the basement. At this house we have a detached garage in the backyard that is for storage. That's where we keep those bins. We've never had a problem storing there, despite extreme temps (we live in Michigan so it gets VERY cold).

Update: we are all moved in! DH and I bit the bullet and bought/assembled garage shelving so that we could move things in directly to the locations that we wanted for storage. One of our smartest moves ever. Fantastic friends who really dug in and helped us out.

Still some boxes here and there to unpack, but really settled already.

Congrats on the move! Garage storage worked well for us in central TX. we also used the attic space for stuff not temperature-sensitive.
