kindergarten questions
Hi, so I'm looking to homeschool dd for kindergarten in the fall.
I really like the looks of Sonlight but the cost is somewhat prohibitive and they can't even seem to mail me a catalogue Anyway, I was following the other thread on literature based curriculum and found Moving Beyond the Page by running a search. http://www.movingbeyondthepage.com/ Has anyone used this before? If so what did you think? Or alternately, does anyone know of some Canadian literature base curriculum for kindergarten? The only thing I've turned up so far is a book literature based unit studies called "Come Sit by Me" by Cyndy Regeling thanks off to do more research

Re: kindergarten questions
I don't have a review of that curriculum for you, but wanted to give you a little in case someone has used it and can review for you.
Sonlight does have their catalogue available in PDF format or you can see a book list on their website for core you're thinking about using and locate books from the library, etc.

Re: kindergarten questions
I have a friend that used Moving Beyond the Page and really liked it. I don't know anything firsthand, though.
We're using My Father's World for K and really enjoying it.

Re: kindergarten questions
I used Sonlight for years but am no longer a customer.
FWIW, I have never had a curriculum for a K'er. I got the MFW K one time and never used it, it was so boring. My two boys who never had K just got scores of 32 and 27 (he was sick that day) on the ACT and are going to college for free at ages 18 and 16.

Re: kindergarten questions
thanks. I did think that Sonlight might be a little more than I need. Kids around here only go to kindergarten 5 days every 2 weeks. I the idea of literature based learning though, dd is well on the way to being a book worm like me. I would also like a little structure to go by and not to much work to do pulling everything together. I've never done this before and my MIL (whom we live with BTW) is a teacher so I need to make sure all my bases are covered.

Re: kindergarten questions
I don't know anything about the other curriculum you mentioned, but I have been using Sonlight with my kids and have been able to cut down on the cost by buying it used on Ebay.

Re: kindergarten questions
We didn't do formal K with Sophia and we are only doing something a little more structured with Eva because she asked.
What we did: Get out of the house and go on errands (practice manners); get hands in dirt and snow (sensory); mess around at park, beach, etc. (sensory, more manners); go to storytime at library and wildlife refuge visitor center; play on Starfall.com at own pace; read classic books together; sing songs; listen to songs; have sturdy toys; go to Sunday school and SCA and mother's club meetings; practice recognizing letters on large signs; learn local flowers, trees, birds; listen to songs in a foreign language; do summer activities through Parks & Rec; help with chores. This is loosely based on the recommendations for "Year 0" at Ambleside Online.

Re: kindergarten questions
Fwiw we bought and used FIAR intermingled with other things. Doing it over again, I'd use BFIAR. Due to a new baby this year and my mental health challenges, we've taken a very relaxed approach this year.

Re: kindergarten questions
If you feel more comfy with some structure you might try the FIAR format but use the books you choose. Literature for a 5 yr old seems a little heavy IMO.I mmight save that approach for later grades. Someone recedntly raved about funnix here - you could check into that K age is such a time of figuring out if they are even ready to read and just reading to them and finding those teachable opp.s
