My church uses the NLT, mostly. If anyone is shopping for Amplified, make sure you're getting the newest edition. I got what I thought was great deal on an AMP bible only to find it was a closeout of the older edition. |

Re: Bible versions?
ESV has gender issues for me in the too conservative direction and the new NIV has gender issues in the completely inaccurate direction I'd rather teach my kids what the Bible means when it says "men" and "mankind" than use a translation that is skewed in one direction or another (no offense meant to anyone who loves those translations - I do read them, but I'd hesitate to give them to one of my kids).

No matter what version you read, discussion with kids is essential.

I'd better make up my mind and order one because I want to give it as a gift to dd in a couple weeks.

Also, the use of idioms matters. "A one woman man" was an idiom used for both men and women who were faithful spouses. It was found on the tombs of faithful wives. So, it is not incorrect to translate that as what it means, a faithful spouse. It is incorrect to translate it in a way that leads the reader to believe the passage is referring only to men/husbands. This is done is many other places in the Bible as long as it doesn't infringe on patriarchy. |
