Gluten Free Foods
I'm spinning from September's Dinners. I'm fairly new to gluten free and so I still don't trust myself with labels unless they say "gluten free." Another poster mentioned that money could be saved on buying naturally gluten free products rather than ones that say gluten free. I've been shopping a lot at Aldi's and they do mark many of their products if they are gluten free, with many of them saying "naturally gluten free". Having those markings on the package make me feel confident that they are gluten free. Where it becomes muddy is shopping at other stores that don't have as clear labels as Aldi's. So my question is: How do you know if a product is naturally gluten free without it saying so on the label? What resources do you use to recognize gluten-containing ingredients?

Re: Gluten Free Foods
My brother. I know, I know, not a fair answer, but he's a lifelong celiac, with 3 celiac children so he's pretty much the expert.
BUT assuming not everyone has a seasoned celiac in the family here are some links. Note, most of these just came up with a google, but a quick glance through make them look promising and something I will puruse again later. Celiac Disease Foundation: https://celiac.org/ Label reading 101: https://www.csaceliacs.org/label_reading_101.jsp Here's some interesting information on the FDA regulation re: gluten free labelling. http://www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceRegu.../ucm367654.htm ---------- Post added at 07:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:11 PM ---------- A huge factor in this is how sensitive you are to gluten. Some people can tolerate some things, such as *potential* cross contamination, better than others. So some people need to be more diligent about in depth research than others.

Re: Gluten Free Foods
Rice, beans, meat, vegetables, corn. Oats have a high rate of cross contamination.
When I was trying to figure out how to go gluten free I pretty much avoided all grains save rice until I was confident reading labels and figuring what did/did not have gluten. I learned to live without a lot of the bread type products and am just as happy omitting them than trying to find an expensive replacement.

Re: Gluten Free Foods
Most naturally gluten free are the perimeter of the grocery store.........produce, dairy case and meats...........not to clarify,
Meats that have injected broths can and usually are gluten, so you have to check those are mostly turkey and chicken. If the meat is shaped or seasoned by the market, it usually contains gluten.Grai In the dairy, some that are super sensitive to a bird that was given wheat have trouble with eggs and Milk from cows given gluten, but those are not as common and usually deemed gluten free. (so unless you are super sensitive, you are probably safe) The aisles with packaged goods in boxes are mostly gluten, so you would have to read labels, but some stores (we have Publix) have started putting different colored stickers for GF items. Grains such as oats and corn that are processed really should not be consumed unless they say GF because they often share a grind stone with wheat/barley and rye. I only buy cornmeal or oats for my daughter labeled GF. Aldi has more products now than they used to, just be aware they are high in corn and some people become sensitive to digesting corn when first going gluten free. |

Re: Gluten Free Foods
Yep, truly the best advice I could ever give anyone regarding going gluten free is to simply eat as much whole foods as possible and avoid as much processed foods as possible.
Meats. Fruits. Vegetables. Dairy. I eat gluten free tho by choice, not allergy, and I don't do any replacement items. Just pretty much entirely the whole food category from above. I have two children who are gluten free by diagnosis. They do more of the gluten free substitutes mostly to make it easier on them so that they don't have to give up those items that they traditionally loved (pasta, bread, etc). I do a lot of gluten free baking, rarely buy baked goods from the store, just because of the price. But when buying things such as condiments or other similar items that don't usually contain gluten, I just read labels. For example, I am never looking for yogurt to be labelled as gluten free. Sure, some flavours could theoretically have added gluten if it's a weird flavor, so I will read all labels, but I wouldn't look for a "gluten free" label on it. In fact, I would likely think it was odd if there was one. Things like that. There is a recent trend of some food manufacturers to label items like this that don't contain gluten as "GLUTEN FREE" and to me, it feels like a marketing ploy so it sort of annoys me. Especially when they label is "gluten free" and raise the price because of the label, which is often the case. ---------- Post added at 09:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:40 PM ---------- I *think* she was saying that first list of things that she does eat that are naturally gluten free, and that oats are highly likely to be cross contaminated. Not that the whole list is. At least that's how I read it.

Re: Gluten Free Foods
I agree whenever I talk with anyone about gluten free foods I tell them to look for the naturally free foods. Lots of label reading!

Re: Gluten Free Foods
The way I have always done transition of our diets, to remove dairy, gluten and soy, is to plan out two months of meals I already made that happen to be free of what ever. And then after two months I will consider adding in substitute items.

Re: Gluten Free Foods
I dont buy a lot of " gluten subsitute " products. We just mostly go for naturally gluten free. So grains we do produce and meats rice beans and potatoes for carbs/starch.. I do but GF pasta (barilla) and GF bread (or I make it).
I always have a pack of GF chicken nuggets in the freezer cause kid.. that is about it though.

Re: Gluten Free Foods
only read the OP but the simpler the ingredients list the easier it is to know-- hidden gluten can't be hidden in real food. Most foods that have gluten also have to list it in the allergy declaration.
My big frustration is where things say "gluten free" because the FDA has determined they can use that label if they have "less than" a certain percentage of gluten, or if the food is sprouted So learning to read the labels is super important IMPE

Re: Gluten Free Foods
I ran to this with rice milk. It is labled gf, but apparently they use some gluten in the processing and the supposedly pull it all out. It passes the standard to be called gf. My dh reacts to it. It was maddening g.

Re: Gluten Free Foods
I'm so sorry she does -- I'm glad you know what it is now! I get furious when "barley grass" is listed and they want to argue with me that it really is gluten free Barley grass poisoning me is why I figured out I had to be gluten free
